Whenever the criteria for 'success' has been fully met.

For some it will be successful just to open. Or to attract some members.
It could be a success when you are happy with it perhaps

I totally agree with Chart Music.

You should set yourself goals, when these are acheived you have sucsess.
Take things in stages, make them acheivable, its better to set easy targets as acheivment is a good motorvator.
When you have acheived those goals set some more.

Sucsess is where you set the bar.

Forum is successful when there is a lot of visitors and when you got informative information on the users and moderator.

I consider my forum a success.... I'm not aiming for numbers, high traffic,or large volumes of threads. Once there are healthy discussions and people are enjoying themselves, I am happy.

My perspective of a successful forum resides not in quantity, but rather in the quality of issues being addressed, or ideas being shared.

PS. Many webmasters focus on gaining traffic, and consider this a success, but that's just the start... this traffic should become members, and my perspective is that a truly successful forum has dedicated members, rather than a large membership listing with only few who post.

We have had a nightmare with our music forum. 95% of postings were porn related spam and I spent ages everyday editing it. I gave up about a month ago and removed it from our navigation bar. If anyone has some useful tips on how to stop the spammers for a phpbb forum we would be very grateful.

Thanks

What's the registration method for your members? Do you have the captcha code feature during registration?

This helps me avoid spambots from registering onto my site.

As for porn links. I say to ban the culprits who post these links, or use censors at your site, but I prefer banning

Yes this is an easy fix.
All spammers target phpbb.
No matter what they do on the mods, spammers will target the most popular.
Go try wowbb.
I shut down 2 VERY successful forums that were getting slammed even with the mods suggested.

I installed wowbb and added to free mods. The first is a math question (ie what is 24 + 22). Then they have a double captcha word phrase.
The spam posts went from 50 - 100 a day to 0.

They'll give you a domain name, do full install and support, and host for about $7 a month.

Thanks a lot for the pointers. We were using the standard phpbb sign up as unfortunately I have no web design or programming knowledge. The wowbb sounds like it could be the answer for me. It's strange because even though the forum categories were all music and disco related we were getting 50+ porn related entries a day and having to constantly delete postings was taking ages.

Thanks again

A forum is successful when you have a good few threads and posts created a day that is not done by yourself or your friends or from an automated way.

It's also a success when you are making some money from it and also have a good number of visitors on it per day.

I think it's about how the forum operates and the things that it serves to its visitors..if it has nice discussions, informative insights, good threads, friendly contributors and updated contents..then it can be considered successful

I agree with Jusen, many a topic and discussions going with lots of content.
There is nothing like going to forum, making a post and never getting a reply!

I think when you notice a huge number of spammer targeting your forum ... then your site is successful ... :-)

Because spammers target busy forum ... IMHO
