Basically, what it is is an interface that you can use to write code that connects to Googles applications, like Google maps and Google search for instance. One of the biggest uses I've seen of it is Google maps. If you have seen a map on a classified ads website that gives little ticks to show the location of certain items for sale, that would be a good example of a Google API. Another common Google API is Google checkout. If you use Checkout to sale items or services on your site, the buttons that you use that say "Buy Now" are API's.
