It is a good idea to have unique keywords and description tags though OWG. I think Yahoo sometimes takes care of the keywords part.

Agreed, keyword meta tags are almost worthless... I do rely on this tag with the build in site search script that I am using , but as far as search engines go... No need for it at all

Content is a king, BUT only the good content will not get you much traffic, - The content on My site is ranked as "Advanced Degree (PhD)" by www.websitegrader.com, and it is all original, (about 1000+ articles) yet still I feel that I dont have enough traffic compared to some of the competitors with their stupid to say the least sites, so my guess is that the Actual Keywords and their position on Google is the key... And that is achieved by External links pointing to your site pages, with the keywords as the anchor tags in the links.

Hope that helps

Here is a one meta tag you might need.
It is one of the meta's that google uses.

Here is the quote from Google's Vanessa Fox.

"The way we generate the descriptions (snippets) that appear under a page in the search results is completely automated. The process uses both the content on a page as well as references to it that appear on other sites.

One source we use to generate snippets is the Open Directory Project, or ODP. Some site owners want to be to able to request not using the ODP for generating snippets, and we're happy to let you all know we've added support for this. All you have to do is add a meta tag to your pages.

To direct all search engines that support the meta tag not to use ODP information for the page's description, use the following:

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">

Note that not all search engines may support this meta tag, so check with each for more information.

To direct Google specifically from using this information to describe a page, use the following:

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOODP">

For more information, visit the webmaster help center.

Once you add this meta tag to your pages, it may take some time for changes to your snippets to appear. Once we've recrawled your pages and refreshed our index, you should see updated snippets."

Nice n useful info here for me.

1) so if metatags are worthless, why do we bother to put them?
2) what are H1 and H2 tags?
3) i guess its a liitle too late for me to optimize my urls had named them t1, t2, etc...

but yes good interesting content, which is regularly updated is all what iv tried to focus on; and used keywords based on common-sense. plan to now study links mentioned here.

Thanx all

I believe they are useful. They help in many ways for different things and different search engines. Just because GOOGLE may not follow some of them does not mean you should ignore.
H1 and H2 are the Headline tags.
Most programs like Frontpage or Dreamweaver have this option listed near the font selection box.
Never too late to update.
You can also use a rewrite.

Thank you everybody, I am very new to this seo subject. When I started I was focusing only on Keywords and link. I didn't even know where to put the meta tag, Our advertising was totally based on our reputations and google ad words. The last six months I have tried to improve the keywords and meta tag and the traffic increased tremendously .Also posting in board and forums related to my site helped a lot getting new traffics.

but backlinks of my articles with my current url's like t1, t2, etc exist in several forums. wont i lose them if i rename my urls now ? for example i have http://www.winvistaclub.com/t1.html Now if i rename/optimize it to, say /make_vista_faster.html wont it mess up things NOW ?

how/what/where does one use a rewrite, in any case ?

Yes, and now you are getting into a more advanced programming issue.
There are several good articles about what rewrites work and what don't.
It involves a lot of reading.
Sorry.

Page title is 'twechnically' a META tag, description is Definitely a META tag, these are NOT worthless, in fact the title is absolutley essential, because if you don't have one, google will grab either the first bit of text, or the first H1, or the DMOZ title.

I wouldn't owrry too much about optimising your url's, as an afterthought if you have backlinks then a 301 redirect is ok but it WILL hit your rankings for a little while as Google puts the jigsaw back together.

First step is to start from the very basic element
On-Page optimization is the first step towards getting a high rank in search engines.
Factors you need to consider in On Page Optimization:
Title-tag
META-Tags
Description Tag
Keyword Research
Content Optimization

Off Page Optimization is more on Link Building.
Do some Directory Submission
Article Submission
Link Exchange
