Default Google banning paid links?

Found an interesting article on webpronews today and thought I would share.
It addresses the issue of Google manually DELISTING paid links from directories.
Here is a quote..
"As many as 60 directories, according to this report, suddenly dropped in rank, leading to suspicion that Google has begun aggressively (and likely, manually) targeting paid link directories deemed to be in violation of the search engine's quality guidelines. Some have suggested competitor sabotage via the recently initiated paid link reporting form.

Some of affected directories included Aviva, Alive, Big Web Links, ewebpages, Directory Dump, Elegant Directory, and Biz-Dir. David Eaves, the owner and operator of Biz-Dir told WebProNews that about 550 of his directory pages have been dropped from Google's index altogether."

Your thoughts on if this is good or bad...

I was a bit sad when i heard about this since a great friend's site was concerned as well, but this movement produced almost the same chance for everyone relating website promotion.

Havn't Google said before that paid directories are okay?

I can imagine they have come up with some other method(like identifiy a links farm), as doing it manually does not seem in the spirit of how Google works.

I thought that they always 'disapproved of' paid links but had a philosopy of only creating more & more smarter ways of determining Rank rather than specifically targeting individual sites that go against their policies.
However, Google - quite rightly - are still totally obsessed with quality of search results... so I wouldn't be too suproset if they decided to do a bit of Spring Cleaning of very large sites if they felt they were genuinely having an undesired effect on teh quality of search results...

That is what most people think but here is the text I copied from my google webmaster console. It is from a form that you can fill out reporting sites that both buy and sell links.
Report paid links
Help us maintain the quality of Google search results.

We work hard to return the most relevant results for every search we conduct. To that end, we encourage site managers to make their content straightforward and easily understood by users and search engines alike. Unfortunately, not all websites have users' best interests at heart. Some site owners attempt to "buy PageRank™" in the form of paid links to their sites. Buying links to improve PageRank violates our quality guidelines.

Google uses a number of methods to detect paid links, including algorithmic techniques. We also welcome information from our users. If you know of a site that buys or sells links, please tell us by filling out the fields below. We'll investigate your submissions, and we'll use your data to improve our algorithmic detection of paid links.

That is a great article and one that EVERY website owner should read.
I also like the fact that they are working on "adsense spam" sites.
I hate those "living parked" pages.
Thanks for the post.

Hi there

I think this is very good, for a long time people have been selling links to make profit out of webmasters and buying links to manipulate their ranking.

Big G is doing the right thing, this is not what we want to happen, we want links to occur naturally, and not people buy their way to the top of hte search engines !

I agree with you usearchme.
I'm hoping it also cuts down on the mass publishing of directories.
There was a day when there were a bunch of quality directories run by people that actually cared and watched them. (Like the Iwebdirectory) But now people build them and let them fly on auto pilot.

What about the paid links on the front of these forums? will they get the site canned? some are to gambling places, those are trouble since its not legal to gamble online in the US.
