It is good to have the description added to your meta tags as Google does use it sometimes in their search results.

Yes, you are right. Google makes the most relevant snippet of the site content appear among the organic results. If you design your site fully consciously, pairing given pages with suitable keywords, you may improve the clicking rate with an excellent attractive and convincing meta description.

Most relevant snippet? How can you work out what Google thinks is the most relevant snippet?

You can't work out so it is very hard to determine the snippet which will be displayed under the search results, but if you write a content relevant description i do belive that you will have a great chance that the content of this meta tag will be judged as the most relevant part of your content and will be displayed at the result page.

Will meta tags help in seo? Some say that meta is now ignored by google (i forget the link) so I don't take care of meta tags very much... Now I use meta tags for title, description and keyword only. Should I add more meta tags? I'm trying to use robots but I'm not sure I have written good robots.txt.

I belive that the <title>, meta description, and keywords tags are enough. Sometimes i place meta language, and Content-Type in order to clarify my targetted markets and the used character encoding. With a great meta description you may have nice chance to make google display it under your result link, so it worth writing a short brief of the give page considering marketing aspects. As far as i know the market share of MSN search engine has fallen but it loves good meta keywords.
