I've done some research on signature links and everyone tells me that Google ignores them. I'm not fully convinced, as a significant number of registered links for my site on Google appear to be my signatures from forums and blogs.

I don't think I'd ever pay for them...it would be easier to just join forums and post comments, generating free links.

Google doesn't ignore any link. Some sites might prevent Google from seeing the link or give it a none voting value with the 'nofollow' setting.
