Default Question on Proxy Hosting

I have never hosted any proxy sites but have had a request to do so.
Has any other provider here hosted any?
What are the pitfalls of this...ie heavy resources drain etc

I am wary of doing so as I know alot of hosts wont allow proxies, why is this?

Default Re: Question on Proxy Hosting

Due to high CPU usage, proxies use more CPU resources than any kind of web sites, the more traffic the proxy gets the more CPU resources it needs.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Meti

It's in waves midlandi, it's dependant on the traffic, the more traffic the higher CPU usage it gets. This is simply because the server usually gets more requests when there are more users browsing under proxies.

As far as I know - web proxies are prohibited on almost all shared hostings.
You'll need a VPS or dedicated server.

You sure need a VPS or dedi if you want to host your web proxies. I know that many web hosting companies provide these services. If you make up your mind to have a VPS, I'd advise you to buy it from A2hosting.com ( 4000 MB Disk Space, 40 GB Monthly Transfer for $24.95 / month) and as for a dedi Webhostingbuzz.com for $259/month with Free Setup will be good for you. You may also look at Fluidhosting.com. Nice company with cheap prices. Hope it'll help you.

Alot of providers dont like hosting proxys for legality issues for example if a client was to host a anonymouse proxy site and a visitor were to use the site for illegal activities the logs and all footprints would point directly to the web host in question.

Over the last few years this is what proxys have mostly been used for although there are some non illegal reasons for using them but theres just to much crap on the internet these days..

Add this to the high CPU and system resources, do u really blame hosts for not alowing them ?

Slightly off-topic: why would anyone want to start a proxy site in the first place? Is it for the traffic, monetising, etc.? Or am I missing something else here? Also how does one make a proxy site a viable project since its basically a free service?

Let me know, thanks!

Keep away from hosting proxy istes, if possible. Legal, technical(resources) issues are there, which probably is not worth taking.

You will need lots of bandwidth to host proxy sites, so dedicated is the way to go, I'd start with looking onto the SLA of hosts you want to go with.
You may check webhostingbuzz.com dedicated plans . They don't say they prohibit hosting proxies in their AUP .

You may have also a VPS. If you are an experienced person in running a web server, you may buy a self-managed VPS from Onthespothosting.net for $24.95 per month or a fully managed one ($59.95 /m), if you are not good at its management.
