Default Avoid the Google rat race

During my recent family crisis I had little time for my web sites, but it gave me alot of time to think about what i had been doing with them.
I realised what i consider to be a few important lessons.

Firstly stop the Google rat race. What i mean by this is simply I took a back step and started working out what I wanted my sites to do for me. Was I really that concerened what Google thought or what the Pr was? Were my visitors and customers,as long as they got what they wanted.
That led me to my second conclusion, who were my customers , where did they come from and how could i get more? Simple.... forget chasing something that was always going to be a moving goal post and concentrate on the latter points.
I then began to do some research, not just of my own customers but of other businesses and what they were doing. I also asked myself why do i buy from the companies i do? The answers i came up with were very interesting.
Putting all this together i came up with an action plan.
I now do things completely differently and its working.
Now i am not saying what i did will work for all but by applying the same ideas i am sure will make a difference.
I havnt given up on google altogether but i only give it time if i really have time to spare, i dont now make time.
I dare say at some point I will need to spend the time, but for now....no!

This is a great thread you created. Some interesting points you've mentioned here. Which website(s) were you referring to when these thoughts popped up?

Yes, great thread. Now why not share some of that action plan with the rest of us? Sounds like something I would like to implement.
I know my target market and I actually do have some magazine ads that shoot to them very well. What else can I be doing?
Thanks!

Great comments Midlandi, any chance of sharing more? Raises a point though, as a community have we become hung up on Google too much?

Midi, welcome to the world of Internet marketing.

'Said in Police officer voice'
PUT THE MOUSE DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE PAGE RANK

Professional web marketing is just what you have discovered. and it is what the people who make money online do. When I sit down with people, because of my sales and marketing background before coming to the web, I have always done this, it is the SINGLE MOST important thing IMO. the reason for life of a website. What do you want it to do? This is what you have to do.

Work backwards. Decide what your end goal is and then work from there, not the other way around.

Most people think, I have a site about golf so I will get it ranking for golf and I will get sales. only half right. as you have missed thw who what where why when and how questions. eg

who are the people who take the action I want (say buy golf clubs)
WHERE do they currently buy them
WHY do they buy them there
How much are they there
What is the quality
When do they buy them?

Now you will build a profile of your ideal customer, the ones you want to get to your site.

I have written an article a long time ago about open and closed questions in selling. It was initially aimed at teleselling, but applies equally to the web http://www.oldwelshguy.co.uk/web-mar...nd-close-deals

Ok now you have built a profile of your ideal client, you need to work out how to get to them to your site, and where to deliver them. and THIS is where the qualuity web marketiner comes into his own.

Some people spend £300 on a club, others spend £300 on a SET of clubs! Delivering these two people to the same page would be a disaster, as they would both be turned off by what they see.

The £300 dude is sold to by QUALITY, brands, delivery, reputation association. The £300 set guy is turned on by VALUE, low cost, quality, recommendations about the 'surprising quality for a budget set' lowered my handicap (as they are likely to be newbies to the game and this will be a buying phrase)

AIDA
Attention Interest Desire Action.

You have to get their atttention, make them interested, build desire, and ask for the order (action). Follow those stages, attract the right people, and your business will fly!

Very well put OWG.

I would rep you but systems says I must first spread some more "love"!

I would advise people to read what you have written. To ignore would be foolish.

Just before I go to read Old Welsh Guy's article, I will drop this one liner that I use all the time:

This is a great thread, it is extremely easy to get caught up on the improving my PR tasks and this leaves very little time to spend on actually refining a website.

I know it isn't January yet, but my resolution for October is to focus on developing my site and not my PR, hopefully the latter will increase as a result.

Web 2.0 is becoming increasingly popular, they are essentially building their own internet. Google better watch out...
