Default Buying links? What does that mean?

I am not sure I totally understand what is meant by buying links. I just want to make sure I understand.

Is it purchasing a link from a site that pretty much only sells links? Would you be buying links to increased traffic from that site? Or just to increase your page rank?

Thanks for your insights.

Mary

The biggest reason to do anything with SEO is to drive traffic to your site. When you buy a link, you would be smart to steer clear from sites that are link farms, or nothing but links.....You should take a look at the site you want your link posted on and try to determine if that site would help improve your SERPs or traffic. So basically, the answer to your question is it really depends on the site that is selling links, all sites handle things differently.

Hi Mary, it's wise to remember that Google disapproves of paid links - it's possible for link farms to be blacklisted from Google (so you've wasted yer money!) but it's unliky to happen with content-rich sites. As J-phat says, go for relavant sites; not only are they better for PR but you should get some value with actual referals.

Thanks for your responses.

So lets say a directory that has a page rank of 6 will reciprocate links for free but if I don't want to put a link on my site they charge $10.00. That is considered a paid link? But that one should be ok because it is a directory and appears to be a legitimate directory.

Link farms generally just charge for the link because they have a high page rank and will included anyone who wants to pay for the link?

So on other threads or out on the web if they say paid links are bad - they really mean link farms right.
