Default PHP vs .NET

When it comes to choosing a programming language, which is the language of choice for SEO professionals? I am fluent in ASP.NET, but really like the way PHP and Apache handles URL Rewriting. From a keyword perspective, would it be more beneficial to switch to PHP just for the URL Rewrites?

Dear Geek, I only use PHP but not an expert, .Net to me is something that I never try on.

I think that the biggest difference is that PHP is a cross platform language, but .net isn't. I haven't ever attempted to use .net except once when I was converting a software package I purchased to be used by a PHP machine instead. Plus, PHP has far more support, and is far more used, which means that help is never very far away should you come into an issue. But like I said, I don't know a thing about .net.

I agree that PHP resources are abundant on the web. The thing that I am most attracted to with PHP is the mod_rewrite function. I think this feature may be beneficial in creating good keywords in the URL. However, I'm not sure if that is reason enough to make the switch.

mod_rewrite is NOT a PHP part or module or funtion.
It's an Apache module.

.net apps can be launched on *nix servers using Mono framework.
IIS (default Windows web server app) can be powered with mod_rewrite-like features using ISAPI_Rewrite or IIS Rewrite.

Looks like I'm the odd one out here, never used PHP, but tend to most in ASP, or ASP.NET. I think the message here when prgramming is often influenced by the hosting, an personal preference.

Thanks Mad Cat. I'm not too familiar with PHP/Apache, i'm more a .net guy. I'll look into url rewrite techniques on the windows side.

You are certainly right there, because of the price difference between Linux and Windows hosting, most of the time people have to choose Linux hosting because of budgeting. But another thing I think you will all agree, which may tend to make you choose between one or the other is the fact that cPanel is only supported on Linux hosting, and cPanel is by far the most popular hosting control panel software.

ASP and PHP are pretty much the same (but you have to remember ASP was around before PHP), but because PHP is so widely supported people tend to go for PHP because of that as well. But ASP seems to be the more commercial role, as bigger websites don't seem to use PHP as much (some do but not many).

I, myself use PHP as it is easy to use, well supported, and is cross-platformed (meaning you can use it on both Windows and Linux). But I don't think the two are really comparable, one works on one platform, one works on both, it isn't a fair comparison...just my opinion.

PHP has become my favorites since it's difficult for me to find web hosting providers using .net especially the ones that I can pay without using my credit card. PHP tutorials are everywhere books, ebooks and the most I refer to is Internet.. I stopped learning .net and changed to PHP. easier and free of license. I even can use textpad/notepad to write php codes once when I learn PHP just to make sure how to use php syntax.
