Default Please explain?

backlinks are pointless if the site that is linking to you does not share the same content.
Example - Software site linking to a dating site

I doubt the content of those two site will be the same resulting in a useless backlink.

That is what i have read a lot here.

So my questions is.

How does google or what ever search engine separate a dating site or any site with any content from a directory site?
Everyone says make sure to submit to plenty of directories the help improve you pr or what not .
So if the content isn't relevant to your site and the SE don't give you any credit for these backlinks then you wasting your time right?
So to submit to directories it would be useless if you don't have a directory site? until you can prove that all the millions directories are seen as directories by Google or what ever search engine i find this to be a waste of time? unless an backlink is just a backlink?

Default Re: Please explain?

The thing about content is that it can be just about anything. As with the case of directories, the listed sites titles and descriptions are content. Directories, as you know, are divided into seperate similar groups of listings, so not only is your sites description relevant to your site, but so are other sites listed on the same page as your site. Really good directories also put relevant content into the appropriate categories, like articles for instance, to help improve the relavance of the page to the sites listed.
