Default Where are all my backlinks?!

Hi all, Ive been working hard over the last few weeks to increase tha number of backlinks to www.marsguitars.co.uk ... many forums, directories etc.
I see some of them in Yahoo, but NONE in Google! Any ideas why they're not showing up? I know it takes time to be crawled, but I thought at least some of them would show up by now.
Thanks,
Fustrated Paul.

Paul, i think this phenomena is quit general. I checked your backlinks at Yahoo! Site Expolorer and it displayed about 80 links from different domains. I don't know whether you have a google webmaster account, but that would provide you much more accurate inlinks than the link:operator.

Google totally changed the way the link: operator returns result, about 2 years ago now. At the time Matt Cutts told me that it shows 'a selection of links' he also said there was an algorithmic process to the selction shown, but would not be drawn on the workings.

There is a simple process (which I have automated) to checking links in Google.

1. Run a backlink check on MSN, & Yahoo. aggregate the pages showing as backlinks, run a script to check if those pages are cahed in google, then run the check to see if the cached version has your link on it, or if it is a pre your link version of the page.

Viola! You now has as complete an automated idea of backlinks in Google as you are likely to get.

I use this script all the time and it is fantastic . It is one of the many specialised scripts I have had written to help me do my job properly.

OWG is it a php script or a different desktop application?

It is a php/mysql script, but it is on my server and access is allowed only via premitted IP Addresses in the HTACCESS.

As I said, I have had quite a few scripts written for me to help me analyse situations. There are about a dozen or so metrics that can help get a better grasp on why a site is ranking well. I can look at a site and instantly work out all the on page stuff with my eyes shut. but the more in depth link analysis etc is cruscial.

One script I have produces a complete map of inbound deep links together with anchor text and about 6 other metrics for measuring the anchor page and site. I am obviously not going to post what these are on an open forum though, but they tell me enough to do my job with the least effort and maximum efficiency.

Cool Re: Where are all my backlinks?!

Thanks Guys. Google Webmaster is also showing zero links, which is why I was getting worried - the links are obviously there, but not recognised (or, more accurately, not reported) by Google. I wondered whether they only update the link reporting at the same time as PR reporting. But that would be crazy.

YEp, and even then google doesn't show them all. They broke it to stop people link mongering against their competition.

Google has always shown only a sample of the links coming into your site. These links are updated in the search results every 3 - 6 weeks. Even though google only shows a small sample, this does not mean that google doesn't count the other backlinks when displaying search results. Google updates its search result pages for standard searches continuously, and these search results take into account all links that google has found.

It doesn't mean that if your link doesn't display on Google it means you have no backlinks....

If you want an accurate reflection of Google backlinks you will need to get a webmaster account with them.

Hi Botman,

I have a webmaster account, but this too was showing no links.

However, I've just checked again and it now show 103 external links! Hurrah!!

That's not all of them, by any means, but at least it's a start.

I guess there's just a lag in them showing up, but they get there in the end.

My Alexa rating has also gone up by about a million in the last few weeks! (OK, it's still pretty low... but going in the right direction )

Yes, yes, yes... I mean the number has gone down.

When I said the rating had gone up I meant "it's got better". Confused? me too.

Glad to see someone was paying attention!
