I have used alexa for years now and alexa has also been around for years now so they probably know more on what to do and how to get things a little more accurate.

Although alexa is not 100% accurate, they are still good to use from time to time for some stuff.

I rarely use Alexa or Compete, I just download my webstats from my server using an ftp client. This is by far the most accurate method for monitoring web traffic if you can access your webstats files. Talk to your hosting company, this may be available.

I agree...As far as statistics go, access logs are second to none. However, if you are wanting to gauge the success of your site and your traffic building and SEO efforts, you need to have statistics on your competitors sites as well.

Unfortunately, access logs don't contain that information, and most webmasters wouldn't want to share with their competitors anyway.

That's why using tools like Alexa are important. Understanding the tools is also helpful. For instance, if you operate a webmaster related site, your Alexa rank will be higher than if you operated a cigar forum....The reason being is because more webmasters have Alexa installed than do Cigar Aficionado's. When using Alexa, it's important to only gauge your site with other similar competitive sites. If I am looking at my Alexa ranking for officiallost.com, I look at it in comparison to sites like lost-forum.com and losttv-forum.com. That helps me to accurately gauge the effectiveness of my efforts. If you can find all of the best sites on the internet that offer the same type of content that you do, it would be best to compare with those sites.

Also, Alexa rank is just a conglomerate of data. It's a combination of your page views and reach.

Inaccurate in that the data is incomplete, not 100%, but I understand Alexa uses some method using some browsers and compete has USA only data and so while both are useful there are not entirely complete.

I understand that method, but many times you want to evaluate sites that are not your own and those you can't install webstats etc.
One common example is look at competitors sites. In such a case you are looking for external traffic data to understand what is going on.
Therefore having a good knowledge of Alexa and Compete can be of benefit.
