![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi guys, here I am again As you may have noticed from my previous posts, I was rebuilding my site from a static HTML site to a dynamic site... And today, the dynamic went live ! (will have to start a lot of SEO work again because I had to change all my filenames )The site is now much more interactive because visitors can leave their reviews for all the books I discuss. I also plan to add more functionalities in the future... Right now, only the Dutch part is dynamic. The English part will go live in a couple of weeks and will use the same look & feel as the Dutch part. I think the colorsheme is much better and brighter than the earlier version and make reading the content much easier. Can you give me your opinion on that ? Dutch part English part Of course, any other remark or critic is welcome Thanks

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Olé, a tableless site! Eric, i think the brighter colour makes reading easier but the pattern you use as backgound makes it more difficoult. I think you can ease the seo challange using .htaccess redirections listing the old URLs and specifying the new ones like this: Quote:
I honestly admire you because you started to learn the php language, so i think generating keyword rich URLs won't be a huge step for you, so i suggest you to go for it ![]()

Don't ask me why...but I was sure you would be the first to answer ![]() As always : Thanks a lot. I already thought about the .htaccess but have a couple of questions about that : 1) How long can this list be ? I'm talking about more tan 1000 url's from the old site. Will this not slow down the whole ? 2) How long does this list has to stay in .htaccess ? I suppose after a couple of months, after Google picked te new URL's up, the list can be deleted ? Ok some old links from other pages will then be broken, but I can handle that with a custom 404 page. The SE are more inportant to me as all old pages already got PR from 1 to 4.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Eric, the telling the truth i don't have relevant experience concerning long .htaccess files, since i use only short ones, mainly for the www, non www domain question and for custom 404 pages. I don't know whether it would slow down your site, but containing 1000 row i think it wouldn't be larger than 20KB calculating with normal bandwidth it's nothing. I honestly hope OWG will find this thread, i guess he has relevant experience on this issue. ![]()

![]() | The brighter color and heavy graphics for your background is not so good for me. Don't used border to much and dont used dark color. |

Well, I guess I should give it a try and see what it gives...maybe first investigate which pages are really interesting and so limit the size of the list. Oh yes, I can do another thing OWG HELP Quote:

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I like the site, although I can't remeber what it looked like before, it's been a few months since I've been on... ![]() I noticed that on the English side of the site, the English is good, but the book titles in the book list are not English titles. The same thing for the book cover images at the bottom of the home page. But the look of the site, the colors and the layout are great. As far as .htaccess goes, if you changed the names of your files from example.html to example.php, then you should only need a few lines in your .htaccess file. If you are on Apache server, you can even set the server up to parse .html files to be read by the PHP parser using .htaccess. Did you change the naming structure of your site, or did you keep the names of the files the same, and just change the extension? |

Thanks for the compliment ! The problem of the non english titles and images will be solved when switching to the dynamic version. Before taking the decision to rewrite the complete site, I had to manually adapt every page when I started translating from Dutch to English... Now, al info is in a database and so I just have to adapt a couple of templates But rewriting in PHP obliged me to change the filenames. Before, with the static pages, I took a unique number as ID for each book (and filename) from a databaseprogram I used to catalogue my books. But with the new site I also wrote an admin-panel that I use to add books quickly. As soon as I add a new book, 6 different pages are created based on the info in the database. To do this, is used a completely new unique ID generated by the database... For example : The da vinci code in the old version looked like www.boekensite.net/boeken/details/4706.html Now it became : http://www.boekensite.net/boek.php?id=28 So you see...it's not that easy and more than just changing the extension. So, now I think the best is to track my most important landing pages, witch are the best pages in the SERP's, and to add them to .htaccess. Tracking is quite easy with google analytics.... but I have the problem of the total number witch is huge ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There isn't any limits on the size of .htaccess files that I've ever heard of, but each time a page is accessed, the .htaccess file will be accessed too. If the file is very large, it will slow down how fast your page loads in the clients browser....Perhaps you could just create redirects to your more important pages, and just forget about the old less significant pages, and let them start over from square one......? |

![]() ![]() | Everytime there is a request on a folder, the HTACCESS file is read. so if you have a single HUGE HTCCESS file then it is going toput resource pressure on your server and slow the site down/get shut down by your hosting company. WHat you need to do is to break down the HTACCESS file into smaller files for each folder that relates to the contents.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks OWG ! And what about time... once the SE picked up the new names, I suppose I can delete the concerned lines and such make the file smaller again ? I've read on some sites that you have to count 6 to 8 weeks before the SE's updated the new pages. Is that correct ?

![]() ![]() | you should leave it in place until the search engine spiders are no longer requesting the old urls. BUT I would want it left in place forever, as it redirects PEOPLE to the correct page from links on oither sites.
