Big .htaccess files are not good, you can speed it up by adding it in your apache config assuming you have apache level access.

There is problem in that as http://www.boekensite.net/ loads you can't read what is written. I think somehow the colours want to be changed around otherwise your new visitor might click away before the page becomes readable. The book images are about 50KB each and makes loading slow. In you don't change the colours for fast display perhaps the book images could be significantly smaller. 5KB would seem more reasonable.

SEO and page layout is good although google ad clicks likely to be low on the homepage due to ads being right at the bottom.

Yes, I understand that. But I have a quite good view of the links to my site. The only links to deep pages in my sites are from people which are linking to images on those pages...besides using my bandwith, it don't bring me any visitors.
There are only a couple of pages with direct links to them which brings me visitors...those will indeed stay in my .htaccess. (But those will not make my file "huge" so, no problem.)

I was primary interested in the time the other 301's had to stay and your answer correspond with what I had in mind.

You're the first that mades this remarks... was the page that long to load ?
You're right at that point. Now that the site is dynamic, I can easily "play around" with different image's. The ones you see at the homepage are the same as the ones you see on detailpages like this one : http://www.boekensite.net/boek.php?id=530
With the static site I had to give in the name of each imagefile by hand... so it was a lot quicker to use the same image for different pages. Good remark, thanks.
I know about the google ads... but I don't want them to "disturb" to much my design. I didn't make this site to earn money (of course, I don't refuse it ) but my primary goal is to offer content. It's a hobby after all.

Yes, cleaned my cache and timed the load. It take 10 seconds before the text* becomes readable.
As the text appears but is not currently readable (black writing on dark brown background) It would be less then 1 if your background was light or your text* was light.

* by text I mean the stuff starting 'Wel, om alvast goed te beginnen, hartelijk welkom op m'n webstek. Als je hier via een zoekmachine bent aanbeland, betekent dat waarschijnlijk dat je op zoek bent naar informatie over boeken (thrillers in het bijzonder)...en dan ben je op het juiste adres !'
