I agree with jumpenjuhosaphat

As someone that makes a living on the net i to have noticed that the majority of "senior" webmasters tend to use alexa toolbar

What i mean by "senior" webmasters are those that have a min 5+ years full time online work experience and or run a professional website..

Its usually those that run a personal sites or several small personal sites that u hear grief regarding alexa.

- i meen no disrespect -

If you dont like the toolbar or feel its a poor method for rating than just dont use it ..

for those of u that obsess about it lol - DONT

Alexe by all meens is not acurate - however it gives u a "general' outlook at the traffic to your site

such as:

1,123,000 - Sorry to say .. U get very little traffic
200,000 - Not bad , but could be better
10,000 - Dam im good
1 - Im God

like mentioned before its not 100% acurate - some people will buy a product off a site with a rating of 15,000 rather than a site with 100,000

Beware!

Alexa can be minipulated !!! Just because a sites rating is low doese not meen it gets that much traffic ..

How to be sure?

If u are those who check ratings or PR rating when purchasing .. REASEARCH THE DARN COMPANY FIRST !!!!

I cant stress that enough!!

dont make decisions based on any ranking. . .

Alexa is used primarily by webmasters to mesure the "General"
traffic as a whole on the net

My office has over 560 PC's all used 24/7 online surfing around the net and all have alexa installed and all our employees are proud to be contributing to alexa as it does hold some value to webmasters and probly only webmasters..

Theres hardly any other stats prog or script out there today that allows u to see where ur site sits compared to others on the net as a whole. like i said again and im not gona stop saying it as no one seems to get it lol BALPARK !!

lol

Myself and other professional programmers and webmasters here far to much hipe and wining from people about there rankings...

dont worry about them damit lol. build a quality site, with good content and the traffic will come ..

Now back to how alexa can be minipulated ... Its very easy, so dont put any baring on a sites rank such as PR or alexa while making a financial disision like purchases or so forth ..

One grief i do have regarding alexa is just that.. Its to easy to minipulate.

a simple script such as this below opend in IE with alexa is 1 of many simple ways to fraud ones rank

PHP Code:
<html>
    <
head><title>Reload</title>
    <
SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.2" type="text/javascript"><!--
        function
reload(){
            var
strI=document.stored.Arrayvalue.value;
            var
str = new Array(20);

// insert target URLs between quote marks in array items below.
            // To add or remove the total number items in the array, add
            // lines to or remove lines from the array below and
            // modify the number in "Array()" above and "strI" below to
            // be one greater than the last "str[]" value below.

str[1]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[2]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[3]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[4]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[5]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[6]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[7]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[8]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[9]   = "http://www.domain.com";

str[10]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[11]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[12]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[13]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[14]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[15]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[16]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[17]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[18]  = "http://www.domain.com";

str[19]  = "http://www.domain.com";

                if(
strI==20){

strI=1;
                    }
                else{

URL=str[strI];

window.open(URL,'EC');

strI++;
                    }

document.stored.Arrayvalue.valuestrI;
                var
intNumber=Math.round(Math.random()*45000);
                if(
intNumber<5000){intNumber=intNumber+5000;}

setTimeout("reload()",intNumber);
            }

//-->
</script>
</head><body onload="reload();">
    <form name="stored"><input type="Text" name="Arrayvalue" value="1"></form>
</body></html>
The above script is just an example of how easy it is to fake ones rank..

Theres many steps alexa can take to insure its integraty such as reapeat IP tags or many other ways.. But i do think that its something they do need to get a handle on..

But as a whole i do think alexa's toolbar is a very usefull tool for any and all webmasters..

I don't have it at all. I didn't have it once say about 2 - 4 years ago, but have not had it since. I don't see the point in having it anymore.
