![]() ![]() ![]() | I keep reading about the importance of anchor text on backlinks; can anyone clarify? Is it important (for Google) to have anchor text to match title tags? or domain name? or high-density keywords? or...? Is it good to have consistant anchor text on backlinks, or diversity? i.e. if every inbound link has different text (but relevant to the site) is that better than them all having the same (relavent) text? Or don't it matter?? Thanks, Paul

![]() ![]() | Google places emphasis on a number of areas within a web page, inded one of these is the links anchor text. With backlinks try and vary the text in the backlink anchor, as an example, if you had 30 backlinks then a good idea would be to have 10 with "anchor text 1", 10 with "anchor text 2", and 10 with "anchor text 3". Clearly the text should have some relevance to your site, this is then considered a keyword combination for your site. Check the Google webmasters area and you will be able to see the different external link anchor texts that are used to lonk to your site.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks for that Alan, I guessed it might be worth doing, but wasn't sure. Can you also tell me if there's a maximum (or ideal) number of words or character for anchor text (from Google's point of view)? It's tempting for me to put something like "guitar strings, capos, polish and accessories for acoustic, electric and bas guitars..." etc etc. Presumably this would either be truncated or seen as keyword spamming? Thanks again Paul

![]() ![]() | I dont know of any maximum or minimum (sorry minimum should be 1), but I would suggest a phrase of about 3 or 4 relevant words in the link would be the maximum. I would suggest that "guitar strings" would be suitable, perhaps "acoustic, electric and bass guitars accessories" would be as an extreme case. Check out the webmasters area of google, you will see what google picks up as your backlink anchor text.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks again Alan - I must use the Google webmasters thing more; I tend to forget about it and concentrate on trying to analyse Analytics. Cheers, Paul
