Default Passport Applications - Processing Times?

Who has applied for a passport recently, what was your experience of how long the process is taking?
My wife and I are thinking of driving down to Houston to get ours so we can travel to the UK at end of August.

you'll never get it in time for a late august trip - unless you pay extra for expedited processing - and even then there are no guarantees. It's taking MUCH longer to process passport applications than it EVER has in the past.

My wife and I are probably going to go to one of the national passport agencies, you can make an appointment to appear in person if you are travelling within 14 days, kinda scary, you have to leave it right till the last minute!

I'm pretty "up" on passport stuff, and I've never heard of a US passport that's only good for a few weeks. They last for 10 years. Canada's passports are good for 5 years.

There's no way to get around the cost, and expedited processing will cost even more than normal (slow) processing.

Perhaps you're thinking of a visitor's visa, which are always pretty short term, but no visa has ever been required for an American to visit Canada. Some other countries require not only a passport, but also a visa. But even for the countries that DO require them, visas are only given to people who already hold valid passports.

I live in the UK and it takes about 2-6 weeks (depends how busy they are) in the post, or I can travel 300 miles and wait in line and pay extra for a passport on that day.

Thanks for all the replies, we've decided to travel down to Houston and get in line next Thursday.

Hopefully it won't be too long a wait, we booked the appointment over the phone and will be taking all the documentation along with us. Fingers crossed!!!

If your in the UK then go to the post office and pay them to check over your passport application and then it usually takes less than a couple of weeks (5 days for mine). Without the check it seems to take more like 6 to 8 weeks!
