Your views please.

Which do you think has a better seo on google? or are they considered both equal?

Subdomains are classed as seperate domains I believe and can work well if they are hosted with seperate C-class IP's as if both are promoted correctly they can then bolster each other.

A good directory structure also works well and is probably a lot easier to manage.

Interesting reply thanks. I don't think they offer much over folder based navigation then with regards to seo?

As I understand it C-class is the 3rd octet in an IP so for example

200.195.124.113

Basically I was saying it should be hosted separately but to simply say to have it on a seperate server may not produce the desired affect as the chances are if it's with the same host is will be in the same C-class block.

There are 4 classes of IP. GOOGLE for it. It is not the third octet.

folder is better because subdomains are completely new domains in the eye of search engines

Hi there,

In means of SEO and SERP ranking it makes no difference. But Google does treat a subdomain like an all new website. Probably because many free hosts use subdomains to host their customers on, and therefore they have no relevance to the parent domain.

But search engines do tend to favor directory based websites (or it seems to work for me anyway).

Subdomains come in handy for getting around firewalls too, for instance, at college http://www.iwebtool.com/talk/ was banned, but http://talk.iwebtool.com/ wasn't. But you just experiment and find out for yourself what features you do/don't like.

Regards,
Kieran Taylor.

It depends on what you want to do. A subdomain has more potential cause like said above it is seen as a own website. But you can't promote all of your folders seperately. If you work with folders and you promote your main domain, it also effects the folders. So this is completely different stuff which you can't compare. If you want to introduce something "big" like a forum and you want to promote it seperately it's better to use subdomains, but for normal use you should work with folders I think
