How important to Google is the meta description?

It's very difficult to use unique meta description text because most of the page are in same category so for this typically part of the text is unique and part is common across a lot of pages, though the common element changes between different site sections.

Not that important really. more important to Yahoo. If you use it though, make sure it is meaningfull and try to make it unique for each page.

Google does use descriptions in the meta tag to describe the nature of your site with relevant keywords. No one knows if Google uses meta description in ranking. If it does, the weight may be just a very little.

Keep your meta description unique for each page. Search engines don't like repeat contents.

I some up my reasoning behind not needing meta description like this. From the visitors view of the page it is essentually hidden content (unless you veiw the source of course) SEs are doing everything to ensure results of the search meet the searchers expectations - I can't see them giving any weight to hidden text in SERPS.

If meta of your pages are all same , it;s likely to be put into supplemental results.

That is a common myth now. Google have right out said that LOW PR is the main reason for going into the SI. (I have seen proof otherwise, but if they say it is so, then it IS so right?

Recently I came to know that google look at relevancy because they think like a searcher on the net think. they focus very much on their targeted audience.

Yahoo and MSN use meta alot more than Google, Google only use it if the website has no content on it!

Brigham, if that is the case meta is still important to have it in web pages...
