Do quality subject related reciprocal links have any value?
Or do I really need to avoid these and try to get one way links only?

How closely do the links have to relate to your website content? (we're e-commerce baby & children's stuff)

How do you go about finding them?

I doubt that quality, relevant reciprocal links have any damaging effect on your site.
In my opinion, they can be beneficial - as long as you avoid questionable links.

Check the major SEs for sites that rank with your keywords/key phrases.

In my opinion the subject related reciprocal links still have a positive effect on ranking, -though the one way links are better- and they help the search engines positioning your site in the cyber space. I think the partiall agree of the title tag of two websites reflect a potential link exchange parner.
You may use the allintitle:keyword, allinurl:keyword link operators to find them.

Of course, it would be worth any amount of recipocral links if the site is of high Page rank (PR5 above) if u know what i mean.

I think they can be beneficial, but I don't take the time to obtain them anymore and I don't trust anyone to find a suitable link partner but myself.

The thing with relevance is that you want the websites linking to you to be on the same general topic, but not competing. If you're selling, let's say, puppy shaped cup holders, you wouldn't likely get very far trying to swap links with someone that sells the same thing yet outranks you in the SERPS for the term you're shooting for.

the way I did it a couple of years ago is I would search for websites that ranked well on topics related to my website, and I checked their site out to be sure that it looked like a site that I would be ok with linking back to. I then asked the owner or webmaster for a link exchange with specific anchor text.

To find link partners, just search for websites that rank highly for keywords that are related to your topic.

Always be careful, however, when exchanging links. It's not the receiving of links that can do all the damage, it's when you're linking to websites that are considered "link farms", that could have a negative effect on your websites rankings.

If you do it properly, I think that reciprocal links could be beneficial.

Relevant but not competing ?

For example, I have a news portal site (url in my signature)... what would be relevant websites to build links with ?

I also have an automated reciprocal link exchange system and that is specifically targeted at web designers, bloggers and such because I want my site visitors to have a directory of web developers and bloggers which they can visit. Is that "irrelevant" (because I don't consider it irrevelant as it is a free service I use to encourage visitors to my news portal).... Is my question too complex and requires more understanding of google search engine.

Any comments/input/critique on my Noobie question welcome!

I think inward links are always beneficial whether from a relevant site or a irrelevant site, though their degree of effect may vary a great deal.
