![]() | maybe a silly question but anyway... How long should those three things be: Title, <meta name="keywords" <meta name="description" and one more questions... do we need to use such thing as: <meta name="revisit-after" content="1 days" /> <meta name="robots" content="follow" /> or it is unnecessary ? Thank you ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The length of the first three tags mostly depend on your seo experience and the level of the competition. I usually place the two most important keyphrases into the title tag at every single page and write a short expressive sentance for the description. I suggest not to place more than 6-8 word into the keywords. In my opinion the revisit-after and the robot meta tag is absolutely useless, when you want to make spiders index your site completely.

![]() | In addition, its good that your title tag achieves as close as 80% of keyword density as possible. |

![]() | The first two to three words of your title tag should be the keyword/phrase you are optimizing the PAGE for. Each page is a landing page and should be written on their own merit. I am a true belever that you do not need to waste your time with keyword meta or description. The description tag should only be used in my opinion if you have designed your page where the content falls below the header information that may be the same on every other page of your site. I rank on page one for some very competitive keywords without those tags. I am running a test navycs.com/blogs/ which detail the relevence of the keyword meta and the title attribute (not the page title). Some interesting results so far. Yahoo sees the keyword meta as content but it does not effect serps position. If the keyword is already on the page no need to repeat it. As far as misspellings and such...ah heck, read my blog All three top SEs completely ignore the title="" attribute. Keyword density is also no longer a concern - do ensure you have good code and the page isn't too big for a dialup user to enjoy (use CSS!)Oh, and one more thing. Bots follow, it is what they do for a living. The only reference you need to follow is the nofollow tag. Last edited 06-14-2007 at 06:29 PM. Reason: union |

![]() | I was just checking up on the max title length the other day. It seems that the average max recommendation is 80 characters across the major engines. Usually I keep the title focused to the 2 or 3 keyword phrases I am targeting, and always display the more important keyword phrase at the start of the title. While for Google, the meta keywords & description don't seem to be that important (check out phrases like 'auto insurance', 'web hosting', etc & see how many top results lack meta tags) - but the whole world is not Google. As long as you're not overflowing the tags with keywords that aren't related to your site, I have never seen any indication that they can hurt you. As a personal preference, I include both the keyword tag & description and I keep the meta content in line with both the title & my page content. Normally I have less than 5 phrases in my meta keywords & my description is a one sentence synopsis of that particular page integrating the keywords used in my title.

![]() | Could I put a slightly different take on headers? Absolutely agree with what you all say, from an SEO point of view but the header is also used by Google as a description. I believe that for the visitor, this is where you need to place your key differentiating phrase. This is where you need your unique selling proposition. We get a large number of unique visits from a broader search term where we have no hope of getting on page one. We are listed on page 3. Few people go to Google page three, in our business they get all the directories at the front. But the few who do take the trouble to search deeply are reading the site descriptions and they are looking for us, because we are not a directory. Ours is "Lochside cottage near Glencoe in the Highlands, e-mail us for a rapid reply..." It always seems obvious when you've done it, but it is not so obvious when you face a blank sheet of paper. It would be easy for us to have just put keywords (self catering, holiday cottage, vacation rental etc) at the top, and looked like all the other sites - many of our competitors do just that. John
