![]() | Hi Folks! Since my last "new site" for my string quartet I've been working away in my spare time learning a little bit more about XHTML and CSS (thanks to Jim Degerstrom for putting me on the right path!) and this website to promote my Aunt's new B&B is the result! http://www.ferryrow.co.uk I love this site - it's really my first major website project that I've started completely from scratch so I'm quite excited about it. Any general comments/suggestions/feedback are most welcome! It was designed in Dreamweaver CS3, and its browser compatability checker says everything should is fine. I personally have Mac OSX tested it on Safari 2, Firefox 2, IE5.2 and Opera, and have PC tested it on IE6 and Firefox, and it is fine in all of those, BUT my Aunt has reported to me that IE5.03.xx for PC is not showing it correctly. (unfortunately it's the browser she's using - and it's her B&B... how typical!) What's happeneing is that IE5.03.xx has the main content <div id=content> showing beneath the left hand menu bar <div id=menu>. They should show right next to each other. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that the menu bar is floated left with the content beside it rather than having fixed position, but even if I'm right, I don't know what to do about it! Especially since I haven't seen this myself, I'm not sure how to go about fixing it! Any suggestions? Cheers, Cat In Ayr, Scotland |

![]() ![]() | CSS support in early IE is crap, so tell her to upgrade or live with it ![]() The site is ok, but I am not sure about the Swans, I mean Scotland is not reknowned for swans is it? I would prefer a nice lanscape/seascape of Ayrshire (i know it is beautiful as I have visited there).

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Agreed with the above, the CSS is a bit choppy as well in FireFox (2.0.0.4). Not sure about swans but it works for me, just need to fix the color layout and the CSS in general Keep up the good work! |

![]() | Just to explain the swans... The swans nest in the bay at Fairlie and regularly swim along the bit of shoreline that the B&B's conservatory looks out over. The photograph was taken right in front of the house. |

![]() ![]() | Well done Bagi. For those who are wondering why this has been suggested, it is because of something called canonicalisation. This is where searh engines treat www.domain.co/ differently to www.domain.com/index.php the issue here then is that by linking to /index.php you are diluting your link benefit between the domain root and its index page. Everyone else on the web might be linking to domain.com/ while YOU are saying that the most important page is in fact the index.php page NOT domain.com/ Odd I know but that is how it is ![]() Hope that helps eplain things better ![]()

![]() | OK, thanks to your suggestions, I have altered links to the homepage to being ../ instead of ../index.htm and I think I have also sorted the internet explorer thing too... Turns out it was afftecting IE5 and IE6 on PC, but IE5 on Mac was fine (I'm a Mac user so can't always test that effectively on PC - can only do that at the day job!). Can anyone who has PC versions of IE5 or IE6 take a look at the site and let me know if the main content is showing beside or below the left-hand menu bar?!?! (It should show beside) Thanks a lot! Really appreciate all your feedback. Cat ![]() |

![]() | It doesn't really work that well for me, to be honest. It's has a little bit of an 80's design to it. I think you have some decent content, but I'm not terribly impressed with the template. What part of web development are you most interested in? Web Design, or the dynamic content programming? Personally, I find myself more interested in the programming, so I typically pay a talented designer anywhere from $15-$150 for a professionally designed template, and the take the template and integrate it into the application I'm working with. From the looks of your site, I'd say you're not using a content management system. May I ask why? I'd say roughly 90% of all websites are now dynamically driven with some sort of open source application. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Aye, very true, I use word press as "we all know" building a web site is not fun anymore when you have to make 40+ pages and the joe schmoe over there gets it all done by a few single clicks because of a web app ![]() I would recommend an application, cMS of course and see which one you find to be at most useful, check out www.opensourcecms.com. |

![]() | I like wordpress, but I like drupal a little better. There's a little more of a steep learning curve, but it's got a little better functionality. |

![]() ![]() | Drupal, Joomla (resource hungry) & Xoops are all good platforms (as is wordpress for the right application). There are also lots of simple cms' out there like easy cms, cms made simple etc.
