There must be a better way....

Why not allow 1 link in signature when a member gets his/her second reputation greenie and perhaps a second link when 5 rep points have been reached. I assume a greenie can be removed if someone gets too spammie.

The goal being to encourage QUALITY posts AND registrations and not discouraging already busy Webmasters from consolidating their time elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong I understand the reasons behind the policy, but I think you'll find it counterproductive from a quality perspective AND more importantly from a community growth perspective.

Cheers either way.

Well said, and I am sure that this can be discussed further into a suggestion Thank you for bringing this up as a concern mauiman. Also, the rep points are a bit more difficult to consume than posts as most people are still not aware of the rep system.

Also, some of the forums are programmed to NOT give post count when posting to a reply or thread in general.

We'll see what this brings up into a discussion with the rest of the forum/staff team

What about a simple rel="nofollow" on sig links, and removal of them once posts limits are achieved?

PS: Removed 3 links from my sig!

After 50 posts the nofollow is removed.

Well perhaps there is a way to mod the signature to say have nofollow in only 1 or 2 links.

So when a user reaches 10 posts, 1 nofollow link is allowed, and if 2 links are in the signature, only one does not have the nofollow on it. Then say when they reach 50 posts, another nofollow is removed.

To me, this seems the most logical way to do it as it means you can still have as many signature links as you like (up to the limit ofcourse) but not all of them will be weighted.

A mod could be implemented if it exists, that if any newcomers try to add a link it will warn them that they need to reach a specific post count to get that link placed and to also let them know that there will be a nofollow in the link and that after 50 posts the nofollow will be removed.

Next mod could also be to notify the user(s) by private message that they can add another link in there signatures. To be honest this would the most safest system and save a lot of time from having to send a Global Message to everyone about the signature policy update.

Let me know what you think.

Long time I didn't jump in (I'm not referring to you jump ) so....the 48 hours are passed for a long time already...
Glad I don't have to change anything in my sig but...I would have done it if required.
I agree that quality is better than quantity and when I come here it is to discuss with others, not to post backlinks like many do.

I support the move, even though I had to remove threee links. Hope this doesnt start spamming by newer members.

It's an excellent move, and yes there are some notices that I am watching on specific members that are trying to work their way up to that 50 to gain the one link.

But time will tell

Thank you for your input and agreement on this.

A post that made me think. The reputation system isn't widely used and not a really a good way to determine quality of posts in my view. Maybe in the future but at the moment it's a long way from being useful.
It you have post count target naturally someone is going to chase them, even if there is no SEO reason many people will still aim for there own targets like a nice round 1000 posts etc.
Only suggest that I can currently make to the Signature Policy is to clean out everyones signature periodically. Many of the old one will be dead or in unused accounts.

I think this is a great idea, just updated my signature inline with the policy.

Thanks,

I must admit i do like the idea on having this new signature policy & thanks to you guys you corrected this as everyone can see from my signature.

However, technically & smartly & been a clever ar*e at the minute by you guys editing my signature to remove the links i had there (as i dont meet min requirement) to simply place another link of your own in my signature mean i am now technically breaking the rules again thanks to you guys?

Crazy...

No, you don't break the rules now. I placed that link to help you to find this thread about the rules as Joshie suggested it previously.
