Default Why use MSN?

It doesn't have a great market share in Search Engines. Sometimes its slow as a turtle in glue. And other days it just doesn't find what you are looking for. (at least in my experience). Stick with Google.

Just like Google and Yahoo, we use MSN for keyword position, ranking and backlinks.

Even achieving density of 80% for my meta tag, MSN still record zero for my backlink even though my Yahoo links are increasing daily. Don't think MSN is that significant.

I get a number of referrals from MSN, about a third of what Google sends me, MSN is still a significant search engine.

MSN had backlinks registerd foe my site which I could see with the link: directive, now none. From my reading across other forums I remmeber reading that MSN (or should we call this live.com) has suspended this directive, I don't know if this suspension is temporary or not.

Here's the definitive answer about the use of the link: and the linkdomain: directives: It's from a blog post by Eytan Seidman, the Lead Programmer Manager at Live Search
Quote:
For those of you who use some of the advanced query syntax in our search engine such as link:, linkdomain: and inurl:, you may have noticed that this functionality has been recently turned off. We have been seeing broad use of these features by legitimate users but unfortunately also what appears to be mass automated usage for data mining. So for now, we have made the tough call to block all queries with these operators.
It goes on to say that they do hope to have these back online once a manner to have these used these in the way for which they are intended has been devised.

At least in the US about 10% of the seaches (Feb 07 data) occur thru MSN. My belief is a good majority of those searchers are government employees because of the secure systems the use and are all loaded with windows - you can't add toolbars to your browsers and MSN is most the time set as the homepage so they tend to use what is in front of them. If I recall correctly 28% of the searches in the US are Yahoo and 49% Google.

Majority search? MSN is barely 10% of the search market.

its not at all bad. I have seen many people using msn and they happy with the result. Sometime I cant see the result on google then i have to go to msn or yahoo to find something more specific. Specially their new features like images in live search is better than google and yahoo.
With google one bad thing is there are big fish already there. Whatever you type in it comes up witht their website. Either it is related with your search or not , it will show because there are word machted on their site and because of pr higher.
