Default Dynamic or Static URL.

Can someone explain both options, as I can select either on my directory script which is best and why.

Thanks

Hi, i maintain a directory so i will try to explain the dilemma with my actual script as example. Originally the script displays the categories with the following url mysite.com/show_cat.php?cat_id=7. The URLs contain question mark and equal signs, and that make the URL dynamic. I'm not a programmer, but think that is becaus that number shows the identification number of the category in the database.
If i set the SEO friendly URLs option, the new adress will be: mainsite.com/2/seo-tools/. The mod rewrite apache plugin and .htaccess make the identification number substitute with the name of the category. Called keyword rich URL. Search engines recognise those words and have a very positive affact on the rankings. Theoretically the dynamic URLs don't reduce the flow of the PR, but I don't think so.

Bagi,

sorry for being so thick so my dynamic setting shows my category as
http://www.scotlandsofficialdirector...se.asp?cat=331.

So if I set it to static will it show. http://www.scotlandsofficialdirector...hire/computers & internet/ software.

Absolutely. If you want to display the category name as a part of the URL, use hypen instead of underscores when it contain more than one word. In this case those words will be recognised by search engines as well.

Hi guys

I am very keen to learn about how to do this and grateful someone asked the question.

I have a MYSQL database and my urls show as the cat?php=id1 blah blah and would dearly love to know how to turn that in to the other version which shows words full words instead.

Is there any chance someone could give me some steps to adjust that setting - well where to find it first actually.

Much appreciate your help.

Many thanks
Jennie

Overall, dymanic urls are not as good for seo as static, thats why prodicts such as vbseo exist that rewrite all vbulletins dynamic urls to static urls.

Its a way of passing a value from one page to another

example: yoursite.com?username=admin&password=pass
this code tells the calling page that the value of username is admin and the value of password is pass (& means AND)

Not advantages of dynamic URL over static but static over dynamic....

Static URLs are known to be better than Dynamic URLs because of a number of reasons
1. Static URLs typically Rank better in Search Engines.
2. Search Engines are known to index the content of dynamic pages a lot slower compared to static pages.
3. Static URLs are always more friendlier looking to the End Users.
