Default Am I on the right track?

My site is primarily directed toward the travel and vacationing sector so I googled the terms “vacation forum,” and “travel forum,” and I’m slowly joining the forums and asking and answering questions. I’m making sure that all the ones that I subscribe to are at least a PR5 or higher. The highest site I’ve joined so far has a PR8. Correction – one that I joined had all kinds of traffic put didn’t have a PR, but I joined anyway. And I’m making sure that all the sites are relevant to my site. This is really time consuming - Am I on the right track?

Jackson, i think that you do what you need to do. I guess you link back to your site via signature links. If you are an active and useful member of those communities i'm sure you will achieve your aims.

Another thing you could try is to find blogs that have the 'nofollow' turned off for comments. This way when you comment on the blogs you get a link as well. There are many blogs out there that have this disabled, just do a simple google search.

After displaying the source code of the page which contains your link, serch for your anchor text. If the link contains the
Quote:
rel="nofollow"
that link won't be counted as a vote for google, therefore the PR flow is stopped.

I copied the view source -
<a href="http://www.SouthPadreIslandMusic.Com" target="_blank">www.SouthPadreIslandMusic.Com</a>

What does the "_blank" mean?

I can't find any info on it.

Bagi, that is very interesting to me to hear how you find "no follow"

I develop reciprocal links in www.linkmarket.net. A lot of the other sites cheat, by dropping the link to us after three months. Presumably that gives them a valuable one way link from us after they do it. Well, until I find out.

But from what you are saying, another way for them to cheat would be to show the link to us, but put "no follow" behind the anchor text. This means that I'll see it as a link to us, but Google won't.

If this is true, then presumably I need to look at the source code of every page linking to us where I suspect cheating is taking place. Otherwise I'll get pr bleeding, won't I?

Am I right in all of this?

John

John, Google also follows those links but doesn't count them as a vote, so that won't increase the relevance for the given anchor text and will stop the PR flow. Cheater are regularly very smart, or they think they are. Meta nofollow robot tag, or a local rel="nofollow" are commonly used techniques, but hiding backlink giving pages with the use of robots.txt or just simply display the link with javascript are also not rare. Otherwise I don't suggest you to exchange links with irrelevant sites, or with people you don't trust. There are several possibilities to increase relevance for a particular keyphrase. For instance forum signatures, directory submission, blogging at different hosting providers etc.

Bagi, I'm going to give up on this link exchange business with world-wide directories, and just use forums and articles, where I can control the inbound links and make sure they are one way.
There is a suggestion going around these postings that Google are downgrading reciprocal links, in favour of one way links.
Could that be true?
Thanks for the reply.

Bagi, can you give an e.g. of the nofollow code. Is it like a tag <nofollow>?

Locally the nofollow can be spacified as
HTML Code:
<a href="http://domain.com" rel="nofollow">anchor text</a>
and it can be specified with the following meta tag as well.
HTML Code:
<meta name="robots" content="nofollow"/>

Google ware devaluing reciprocal links but not in all cases. as in most things google there is no black and white. If a site is 100% bang on topic and they link to you and you link back, and the links are on content pages then they count.
