![]() | What do you think: Can I write internet history? Last week I launched the site http://www.WritingInternetHistory.com. I want to write internet history with this site by having 1 billion unique visitors on the 7th of July. It sounds as a crazy idea, doesn’t it? It is crazy, but it is also possible, so why don’t try to achieve it! It started with a contest between me and a few friends, which I lost and that resulted in this crazy idea. After some research on the internet I found out there are more internet users than I expected. There are approximately 1.2 billion people who have access to the internet, of that there are almost 1.1 billion internet users that use the internet at least once a month and almost 800 million people use the internet at least once a week. So possible it is, but the difficult part of this idea is to let every internet user know about this site and after that to let everybody visit http://www.WritingInternetHistory.com on the right date (07/07/07 because it’s an easy to remember date). So first everybody must know about the site before they can visit it on the 7th of July. How can I let everybody know about this site? Advertise on every singel site? This will cost me millions and I’m not a millionaire, so that is not an option. All I can do for now is posting this on a few forums and hope that people read it and write an article about the site and the idea. And maybe somebody will read it and will be interested to advertise on http://www.WritingInternetHistory.com on 07/07/07, so I will have some money that I can spend on advertising. Some people emailed me that they think I only want to get rich with this idea. I admit that a little bit of pocket money won’t be bad (I’m a 18-year-old, so you know why ), but that is really of secondary importance. This is something special what I can achieve, what means more to me than a couple of bucks. Also I got some questions about the bandwidth, 1 billion users viewing the site on one day is a lot. But on the 7th of July the site will only consist off a counter and the advertisements and I have found a company which can help me with the bandwith and they will when the day comes. First I have other things on my mind, like getting the idea “out there”. If you have questions or ideas, please don’t hesitate to e-mail me: contact@writinginternethistory.com. I hope you will visit this site on 07/07/07, because you want to help me, you want to be part of internet history or maybe just because you want to see how it ends as a flop. |

![]() ![]() | It is a good idea, but the number of visitors You talk about is highly unrealistic unless You are willing to kidnap Bush and dress him into drag and make him do a live show. but even then I don't think that there is a server that could handle that kind of traffic in 41 days. That's over 24 million people everyday. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, Actually 1 billion 'hits' would not be that many users, Googlebot and other search engine spiders add to your hit counts, so if you can manage to get search engines to rapidly scan your website daily you are one step forward. detoam is right in a way, but also wrong. A server would cope with this, as long as your bandwidth could, so if you are going to acheive this I seriously consider you make your homepage as small in size as possible. Remember hits do not mean people, you 'could' have 1,000,000 unique visitors and each person make 1,000 hits, and then you have reached your goal, Yahoo! and Google probably get billions of hits a month. Although if you do achieve it, good luck. Regards, Kieran Taylor. |

![]() ![]() | It's okay. I could not believe my eyes too. I had to reread before cluing in. I think the only way to do that is to advertise the event a year ahead do some really nasty publicity stunts to get people really lustful after the event. Show a bit of different parts every week, but at the same time to not reveal too much of what it actually is. Just play with people's mind to make them guess and speculate and spread rumours. And on the actual day of the event show nothing but a 404 page. People would be pissed and try to use different computers and mobiles and so on. They will have a whole year of getting into their head that it is something very important, almost life and death kind of thing. Of course even then You might get about a week worth of huge numbers, but afterwards it will just die. Even Jesus's second coming and fight to the death with Buddha will not get that many people watching. |
