When you go to google.com type link:http://www.websitename.com it shows links. In my site i have only four but i saw in some other sites it was plenty in thousands.What is the best possible way to increase the Backlinks in google.

for ex
my website has only one Backlink now - i want to increase to 20 backlinks. how do i do it in a short period of time. I have tried to give my url to directories and other but when i type Link:mywebsitename.com its not showing up all links. I want to know the criteria for getting backlinks especially in GOOGLE anyone expert here please explain.

Google doesn't show all you backlinks, only a very small proportion of them. Try to use Yahoo for link popularity check with the same link: method. That is more accurate. Otherwise if the links will increase according to the Yahoo results, google will show more of them after updating the link data (4 times in a year).
