I had actually thought about that Alan, creating different rules for different level members....But I tend to agree with Steve, I think it would cause more problems than it would solve. If we did adopt a system like that, I think that if sig links were based on post count that it would be best to move up to the next level at a much higher post count, like 500 posts for 3 links, and 1000 for 4 links. But then again, after we gain a lot of members that have 1000 or more posts, we'd be back in this situation again, where the forums are overloaded with signature links again.

Steve....don't worry about it man, I was just giving you a hard time...

Hehe, it's ok I was wondering why the edit was gone, unless you were playin games in the back O.o

A new system would be nice, but not for post count, to much of a mess.

Why do you say that?
If all old signatures are cleaned it seems quite fair to me.

Otherwise as giovannicosta says it will be unfair for older members, with there signature in old threads.

In fact bizarre but true, it would immediately better to leave the forum now and not return and be one of the 1000's of inactive members if all members signatures where not cleaned.

Just following the rules, I agree with them and have no quibbles. I don't come here for the signature space. If thats all you post for, then you shouldn't part of any community IMO.

Could do this if you make the numbers really steep.
For example
1 links at 100
2 links at 500
3 links at 2500
4 links at 10,000
5 links at 50,000

It's about fairness. Being fair to members rather then creating conflict.

Sig links are an incentive to join and post. Removing that incentive to "breathe some life back into the forum" might be a little misguided.

For what it's worth my opinion is set a cap on sig links for all members at 2 or 3 links and leave it at that. More than enough for members of any level.

Post minimums, member levels, chasing down bad sigs, and all that crap is just wasting time that could be spent moderating and adding new content and features. Then find better ways to reward your long-term members aside from just a couple text links. At the end of the day the best members are probably the ones that don't need rewards to keep active anyway!

Well that's my $.02.

Well, Tekime, that was extremely well put.....And I agree with you whole heartedly....I think it would be great if the members of this forum could be happy with 2 sig links, but I also think that you are spot on with finding other ways of rewarding members that would make them happy about the sacrifice.

I don't personally know of any ways, I hand out rep to anyone that says something helpful, or striking, and I try to be friendly with everyone, but sometimes that's not enough. I think that you are on the right track, if you have any more ideas, I'd love to hear them.

The thing with sig links is that they don't look good....When you have 4 links in the sig it also is a big PR bleeder, which basically cuts down on the link juice that is passed. If I had my way, I would say it would be better to allow a single link per post(so more juice is passed on), but instead of just a static link, I think it would be great if we could have as many links as we wanted, only having 1 link show up at a time....The link would be worth far more then, and for me, being of sound mind most of the time, I would think that would be far more valuable than sharing link space with 60 other links.

Hopefully people are posting in this forum to share information and learn. If you are here just for a link (a link that more than likely is coming from a non-relevent to your content page) then you can better spend your time adding your site to the slew of the free directories, blog comment spam or spam other forums out there. Then in 6 months when you didn't improve your SERPS you can come back to this forum and others like it an use them for what they are truely designed, information sharing and learning.
