I haven't heeard of this but I wouldn't have thougt so. Look at some of the big boys like Microsoft, it has many subdomains too and doesn't appear to be affected.

do not compare msn with our web sites because there are huge difference.
get more subdomain or add new web pages to your web site will affect your ranking if you will not add more links.
If you have thousands links that point to your web site you can add but if your page rank and your ranking is not in the top, avoid to add new pages.

I think that the algorithms can recognise when a subdomain belongs to the domain so although i don't think that it would have any negative effect i think those links are not so natural therefore not so valuable for the main domain.

I think it looks better having something as a subdomain as opposed to a forum extension of the site, and is also easier to remember.

Thumbs down Re: Can too many subdomains hurt my ranking?

If the subdomains are being created to direct traffic back to one domain inparticular even though they contain different content they will be seen as doorway pages that Google is starting to get REALLY tough on.

I read somewhere the search engine look at sub-domains as a 'separate website' therefore it can only help.

I have about 10 subs and hope to add more. I use it because it so much easier to set up and (FREE) no additional cost.

Sub domains are something like new sites so if u SEO them it will not be a problem linking them to the home page.

Just be careful as this can be seen as a spam tactic also. I know of a company that had over 100 websites that all link together and within those websites they each had 100s of sub domains. They had good rankings and many indexed pages at first but then ended up dropping almost all of them from search engines. Now they don't get rankings and have very little traffic for all that effort. Just be careful and be sure that you do not do any black hat seo on your websites or search engines will not like it.
