Ok say i find a script online which i can get for free, infact anyone could get it for free then sold it to a client who was looking for such a script, is this legal? would i have to tell my client i got it for free? where do you stand with this?

Dont do it, most of the free scripts around are "open source". You charge for these you could be in trouble.
The only way round it is to charge a small fee to "cover bandwith" for the download.
There are plenty of scripts that you can get for free that have resell rights with them.
If you want some pm me i have quite a few.

Yeah, if a person is selling something that they don't have a right to sell, then they are breaking laws. But this is the internet, and there is little enforcement, especially across country boundaries. My suggestion is to never pay for a script until you have checked it out fully. The seller should always have a section of a website dedicated to that script, if they don't I wouldn't buy it. I would come here before buying anything and ask us, many of us have used a lot of different scripts before, and might recognize the script you are interested in, or could point you in the direction of a free version of that script. If we can't help you(which I'm sure we can), then use Google, enter the name of the script....The seller should come up in first, or close to first position for the script name. If they don't and somebody else does, then you are probably getting a script that somebody has aquired resale rights to, which means that you can likely get it for very cheap. Enter the name of the script followed by the words "resell rights" or "resale rights" and see what you can find out that way. Look on ebay for similar scripts.....

But no matter what, from now on, come to us first before making any major purchases on a script.

well you could charge for personalizing the script. For instance, someone wants a Forum and obviously developing one from scratch would be quite costly. Instead you modify the look & feel and suit it for your customer. That way you do not charge for the software, but for customizing and installing it.
