Question A Not-for-Profit Directory?

I was thinking of creating a specialist directory but instead of having Adsense ads or people paying for links everywhere, I was thinking of having it as not-for-profit, something for me to look back on and say that was a good idea

Thing is, I don't obviously want to lose money and I'm sure donations would help a little but not entirely.

Are there any other possible streams of revenue? I was thinking of adding a Google Search Bar (or whatever) but I doubt it would be any good.

Thoughts?

I have a few non profit sites. My rugby forum is non profit. I pay for the hosting and run it, all the income is used to buy rugby kits for teams who can't afford to buy their own. I don't take a penny.

I also have 2 directories that are 100% charitable. I also work for charities for free, and I provide free hosting and websites to good causes and charities for free.

Now and again I get to do some paid work LOL.

Essentially the aim is to "break-even" with any profit going to good causes or back into the website somehow. So you have to take money from somewhere ofcourse.

Donations and a Search Bar are the only things I can think of that would bring money in (I don't want PPC ads). OH, how could I forget merchandise?! Although, no-ones gonna go around with my-site-name.org on their T-Shirt are they :p

I once had an ads system for open source projects. You know, like adsense, but it is just for open source projects and is free.
Anyway, it didn't work out in the end. Not enough support, not enough manpower and people just don't trust ads, especially in the open source community.
