Hi Pr sites will probably be authorities (possibly), so ten backlinks witht eh IDEAL anchor text might help you get a high ranking in the SERP's but it will NOT be the PR that will have got you there, it will be the anchor text and authority staus

Links are definitely, 100% not the be all and end all. It's all about the keywords like OldWelshGuy said further up the thread, any campaign will stand and fall with these. The next part is getting the on-page optimization right.

I know this to be true because I have several sites ranking very well on "Big G". How many incoming links does G tell me it have they have?

ZERO...

In summary, get your kw research right, optimize your web pages according to best practices and you should be ok.

In my opinion the relevancy of the linking page is more crucial than the PageRank.

I absolutely agree with this. For long term SEO (as well as short term), try and get your links contextual, and on topic and you will have future proofed your link building strategy.

Only backlinks and the value of those links.

We are talking page rank here though the patented value of a page, not where a page ranks in the SERP's.
