I find Alexa useful for the following purpose.

We have a vacation rental site (self catering to UK folks) in the Highlands of Scotland. We need advertising in the vacation directories to supplement our results from searches. So we probably get four requests each week from vacation sites to advertise with them.

I can roughly sort out their comparable traffic against each other through Alexa. I don't mind if the stats are wrong or biased so long as the bias is constant.

No it isn't important, it is simply a feature, some people do follow the traffic data from Alexa, and those people are only looking at estimated traffic data, not real traffic data. For example if you were looking at comparing some statistics in a marketing sense, it would be stupid to use Alexa's results since it doesn't give you real geographical data, time and date, length of visits, IP ranges, etc, etc. So you get what I am saying here?

Some say not in top 100,000 because they are new sites and Alexa only updates site on a daily basis who are in the top 100,000, and for sites under this I think it is monthly (don't quote me on that, but I think it is). But once the website has had a little bit of age, it will show the data.

As for why directories use it, simple...because some people do take Alexa seriously, but usually these people don't know what they are doing...no offense to anyone, but that is what I think.

Kieran Taylor.

Small correction Kieran, you are correct to say that sites in the top 100,000 are updated daily, those outside this appear to be updated weekly, at least my site is, but I don't go by this too much. (Appears to update sometime between Monday and Wednesday each week)

Alexa rankings differ from SE rankings it's just the computation of approximate amount of visitors in your site... That's all

Web directories only concern about this rating and shows in the homepage.

Do you mean Quirks Search Status FF Plugin? If so yes, I believe or at least Quirk claims that the queries it makes to Alexa count toward ranking.

It is interesting also if Google uses alexa data for its own purposes (PR, SERP)

I would be very surprised if that was true, I doubt they do.

I've wondered if Google use traffic data - I'm sure they must but they can't say so, otherwise we'll all be using tricky software tools to hit our sites repeatedly from all directions. But they know more about traffic than anyone I'd have thought.

Mind you they always underestimate mine against the webanalyzer I use.

What's the use of installing Alexa-toolbar, I haven’t installed it yet.
What does the toolbar shows ? if it just shows the traffic of visiting site then it is of not much of use as you cannot trust it.

Having the toolbar installed and visiting your own sites will improve their Alexa ranking, as Alexa use the data gathered from its toolbar to create their statistics.

Alexa ranking is based on website visits by visitors that have alexa toolbar installed on their browser.

Alexa tracks data of websites which people with the Alexa toolbars have visited. And since not too many people use the Alexa toolbar this isn't the best resource to obide by, plus it is easy to cheat the ranking system.

I suggest you use Google's webmaster tools or AwStats to tracks visitor statistics. Hope this helped you a little, also follow Bagi Zoltan's link to find out the official information.

Don't worry about Alexa getting information without you knowing, you haven't been hacked or anything , as I said, it is all to do with the Alexa toolbar.

Alexa just takes a rough estimate of a sites rank based on the limited number of people using its toolbar.

The busier a site is the more accurate but the less traffic the less accurate.

Its easy for a site that is 1/10th as busy as another site to rank higher in Alexa because just 1 or 2 people who regularly visit the site have the toolbar.
