Google Sitemap? is there any point

I was just wondering if google sitemap actually makes a difference?
It's handy to put in order the pages that you want spidered first however if google indexes 1400 of your pages anyway is there much point?

If you only have 1400 pages of content then there is no point.

But if you have 3000 pages of content and only 1400 are indexed.. Thats a big deal.

Sitemaps are used in order to increase the visibility of a given websites. It has a great benefit if you are not a professional webpromoter, and you don't know how to get your site indexed quickly or your site architecture is not the luckiest.

I think XML site maps are only a suggestion for Google.

Here is brief explantion of sitemap. From the definition itself you can understand what is the main reason for using a sitemaps for a site...

"A site map (or sitemap) is a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion. This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the site. Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines." quoted from source

Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. You can not expect that search engines will rush right away to index your changed pages but certainly the changes will be indexed faster, compared to site that don't have a sitemap.....

Is this sitemap generator http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ acceptable? How would you know whether google has indexed your sitemap?

Joseph, that application will generate you excellent sitemap. In order to submit that all you have to do is to upload the xml file onto the root directory of your website, and specify the URL of it at your google webmaster account.

for me.. no different.

unless you keep adding deep deep pages, far from mainpage.
then IMO... sitemap will help on this
