mTLD (dotMobi) is working hard to get everything set for a new .mobi extention coming in July 2006, the main thing being protection of trademarks.


mTLD is working with the World Intellectual Propery Organisation (WIPO) to make sure that mobile phone (service) companies and other common mobile-related trademark holders get a chance even before the sunrise period to register their domains, then trademark holders, then the general public. Special mark holders will have 1 week before the sunrise period to get their domains reserved at the end of May. This is called the Limted Industry Sunrise.


The .mobi extention is going to be specially for sites that are compatable with mobile devices such as phones, organizers, and PDAs.


“It is through wireless technology that many Americans will experience broadband for the very first time. This announcement is yet another indication of the consumer’s strong desire to access the Internet and other data services wirelessly. Ensuring predictable and reliable Internet access from any device on any network is an important topic for CTIA – The Wireless Association®,” said Steve Largent, President and CEO of CTIA.
Neil Edwards, General Manager of mTLD, said, “Dotmobi is the first domain name to garner real support from the some of the world’s leading mobile players and associations. We hope to accelerate the number of mobile-friendly websites available to consumers on the internet in 2006 by inviting companies to register their trade and service marks in the dotMobi domain.”

lol - guess you guys missed the point where they will be working WITH trademark holders to enable them to

1) reserve names before they are made avail to general public
2) stop squaters from holding a name hostage


This just recently happened with the .travel domain - one which I will soon be able to get names for - if anyone is seriously interested and has a budget contact me for joint venture ops.

Hi there,

I think it's a good idea but personally I don't think mobile browsing will take off. But like kenni said, register the right domain and you could earn yourself a nice lump of cash.
