![]() | I'm looking to start a new community and am wondering what Bulletin Board system people are using and what their pros and cons are. I'm looking mainly at free ones but would grab for my wallet if I get enough convincing arguments for that. I have created two in phpBB and have not had any problems with that so far. Just checking if there is anything better out their. Thanks |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I've used vBulletin, SMF, and PHPBB. vBulletin has some pretty nice features, but the biggest thing that gives vBulletin value is the fact that so many people are accustomed to using that script. I personally prefer SMF over vBulletin. Although it doesn't have some of the features that vBulletin has, it is absolutely free, and the support community is there to help you all the way through set up to customization. I've written quite a few of my own mods for SMF, it's really easy to do. I don't like PHPBB at all, not in the least. If vBulletin is worth $160 for a lifetime license, then I would have to say the SMF is worth $100 for the same type of license. Only SMF doesn't charge. If you don't mind a bit of ridicule from die hard vBulletin fans(most of which are webmasters anyhow), then use SMF, pound for pound, it offers much more value. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, I personally hate SMF now because it simply looks ugly even with a template, sorry but that's my opinion, as for the script itself it is a good little forum. vBulletin is by far the best in respects to security, functionality, endless features and modifications, nice look and it is also just darn good. phpBB used to be terrible for security, but if you check out phpBB 3.0 it is brilliant and has endless features added to it, I would now class it as the free vBulletin because a lot of features have been inspired and used in phpBB 3.0, and it is still in BETA and will always be free. Invision Bulletin Board is good too, but I don't think it is worth the price you have to pay...just my opinion. Go on some forums and check them all out and see what you like yourself, you could get the forum everyone recommends and at the end of the day still hate it .Regards, Kieran Taylor. |

That's an awesome point. I don't think that it really matters what any of us think, what truly matters is that you are satisfied in the end. So with that, I would suggest that you install the latest version of PHPBB and try that out for a few days, you might find that you like it. Even if you do like it, go get SMF1.1.2 and give that a go for a couple of days. Then, I believe that vBulletin offers a 30 day money back satisfaction gaurantee, if they do, then buy it and try it on for size. That's really the only way that you will know which forum script is the right one for you. | |

![]() | phpbb is great! there are a lot of free mods available that can help with the security etc, though i won't compare it witht he vbulitten, as vb is far better! i don't have money to go for the vb, so am using the phpbb, and am pretty much happy using it! cheers ![]() |

![]() | Personally I still have the leased VB license, but I went with SMF instead! - Call me crazy, but I just found it easier to modify SMF compared to VB, but again that is a one man opinion. |
