Default Subdomain question

Do the search engines consider a subdomain a seperate entity than a domain? ie: My domain is www.laffagent.com (t shirt sales) and I set up a subdomain called other.laffagent.com to sell fortune cookies. I don't want my t-shirt SEO to be diluted by ancillary fortune cookie information. Will the engines use the information in the subdomain in considerring the ranking of www.laffagent.com? Will they consider it as a totally seperate site?

Also, would it make a difference if the domain and the subdomain were hosted on two different servers?

Well I'm not sure if hosting subdomains on different servers would be possible, but as far as I know google handles subdomains as separated sites which inherit the trust rank from the top level domain.

Well Bagi, once again I'm going to use some words I don't really understand so I may be completely talking out of my you-know-what, but here it is:

My domain is registered at 1&1. They tell me that even though my website is hosted on another server, my domain name is hosted on their server and therefore I can host my subdomain site on their server. I have registered a subdomain name and will see what happens.

You can only make a redirection into the others server's domains/subdomains, for example try to buy some other www server with their own subdomain they will give you with your account if you do not have yours... after that redirect your domain to that domain on the second server and that is all. You cannot make the subdomain on the other page if you do not have admin rights on the destination server account

I'm so far beyond my comprehension that I know I shouldn't be doing this, but I'm in the middle of it now so I guess I'll use it as a learning experience.

My primary domain is http://www.laffagent.com and the site is hosted on one server, call it server A.

I was able to register a subdomain http://www.shop.laffagent.com. The subdomain is hosted at 1and1, call it server B.

I've been experimenting with the subdomain so ignore the content, but you'll see that you can access both sites even though they are on seperate servers.

What I'm really trying to accomplish is to have the subdomain considered as a seperate site for SEO and SERP. I've gotten conflicting answers as to whether this is how a subdomain is viewed by the engines.

well well. I think bagi is right. if there are two completely separate topics between laffagent.com and xxxxxx.laffagent.com than your seo shouldn't be affected and xxxxx.laffagent.com will rank with whatever content you use in it. I hope that's clear. just make sure the xxxxx is a main keyword, that would help alot.

Thanks for your insight. That does seem to be the consensus, that they are looked seperately.

Hosting at different IPs would be good. Just look at about.com. Very powerful but it's a little like cheating.
