Default How NOT to run a directory

Recently I have read a post by kdemonte in the webtalkforum. His post got me into writing an more detailed article about it.

How NOT to run a directory

Please note that this article is not meant to offend or insult anyone. Think of it as a way for submitters like me to vent our anger. Hope you guys will get a laugh out of it.

You make some pretty valid points. Although, you should keep in mind that when you are submitting to directories, the reason you are doing it is for your benefit, not the benefit of the directory owner. You should assume that the reverse is true. I have a small directory that doesn't get much traffic, everyday I am forced to weed through 100 or 200 new submissions just to keep up with all of the submissions. That's typically why there is a delay. Paid inclusions are so few and far between, it's easy to get to all of them on a daily basis. The first thing I do when approving links is I go through and delete all of the reciprocal links that are invalid SPAM. That usually takes 20 or 30 minutes of time in itself. Then to reviewing sites, if I want some crappy little directory that never amounts to anything, then yes, I can probably get to all of the free submissions everyday. But, I personally like to look at the sites that I'm linking to, make certain that they are placed in the right category, that the description is accurate, etc....On a minimum, each site submission takes about 5 minutes to complete. Multiply that by 100 submissions a day, and you are spending a huge amount of time to include sites in your directory that don't think your time is worth anything, that's why they are submitting to the free directories. Hopefully that will put it more into perspective for you. My advice as a site owner, if you want an easy to submit to directory that get's to the approvals in a fast time, then the best thing you can do is pay for it.

So maybe a good future article to write would be titled "How not to be an ungreatful directory submitter". Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not implying that you aren't greatful, just some of the points you made come across as being a bit ungreatful.

Well, I have a free directory too. In fact I have two (one is a business directory). And I do get tons of spam. I also spent quite a while separating the good listings from the bad too. But that's part and parcel of being a directory owner.

Anyway, that little piece I wrote is just a jest. Nothing serious.

I agree with most of what you wrote. There are way too many crap directories out there, the good ones are few and far between. The only part that I didn't really agree with was the part of getting all submissions approved right away. It's a tough job to keep up with all of the submissions. The rest of the article was agreeable.

Yes, of course. But some directories takes like 8 weeks or more to approve the links. I mean if it's going to take so long, it will probably have a very huge backlog!
