Why would you need a dedicated Server?

Excuse my ignorrence, It has just never occured to me why anyone would you need a dedicated Server?

Having a dedicated server is useful, especially with big sites like iWEBTOOL. iWEBTOOL runs on multiple servers to handle all the traffic. A dedicated server also allows you to do what you want, using all your resources.

Dedicated server is useful when you start running a new website-system, where not only plain html pages are showed, but many underground processes are performed (for ex. statistics calculations, big databases management) and many visitors are coming (or you plan that you'll have many of them). You can start your site with any hosting, but i think there will be many problems when you'll see, that it's not enough and you'll have to find something faster and more reliable. In my experience moving from one to the other hosting company is a painful fing..

Shared Hosting is for small sites. When your business depend on your website, you cant afford to depend on a $5 per month hosting.

Dedicated server offers:

1. Control- Root access : you can configure the system the way you want. Need a PHP accelerator? Special configuration for mysql server? No problem!
2. Security - When you store your clients creditcard info, do you want to save it on a server shared by 100s of people?
3. Performance. Overselling hosts may offer you 1000 GB space and unlimited bandwidth. but if you use more than 2% of CPU, they will kick you out. Obviously, you cant expect to host a big site for $7 a month!
4. Flexibility: Want to run a java application server? Or a server farm for redundency and load balancing? Ofcourse you have to configure it yourself!

There are more. Shared hsoting for kids

and dedicated servers for people who do serious business!

It is not the storage that is the problem it is pure resources. One server is not enough for busy sites. In fact one would be suicide

Can be a problem of enough Ram (apache takes ram per user) or can be enough CPU power where on a VPS the CPU can at times be eaten by other people eating the servers CPU.
Also there is issue that VPS can be down for software upgrade etc, which you have no say in the timing and duration of them. Important if you require a high uptime.

Wow thanks for all the replies... Im going to delve just a little bit furthur into the questions... IF the host says that they host unlimited domains with every account.. Would it be problematic to have 100 small sites?

If you're an advanced user, dedicated server can be very helpful in many ways, setting it up as a secondary personal storage server, proxy service, voice communications service, and also hosting emails/websites on it at the same time.

Many users also setup their dedicated server as a Gameserver, and various other services which all can be installed on your own dedicated servers without resitrction most of the times.
