Deffinitly PHP, asp is to one sided. If you host your site somewhere and have to switch for whatever reason, you can always bring the PHP butnot the ASP.

I have been running into this problem a lot lately.

ASP is better for jobs because so many people run windows.
PHP, I believe, is better for the web because it is so versatile.

But, there is nothing more irritiating than being locked into one or the other because the search engine ranks a page by .asp or .php.

Whether people run Windows or not doesn't decide whether ASP should be used or not. ASP is a server-side language, and there are more Unix hosts that Windows hosts.

PHP is not only *better* for web apps, it's ONLY for web apps. And ASP can be made just as versatile. Have you ever coded in either?

I do it all the time.

Originally, ASP was my only SS language. Then, all these cheap Linux Hosts appeared and PHP was standard.

When employers/managers use Microsoft all the time (in non-technical companies), they figure if it's good enough for the desktop it's good enough for the server.

Classic ASP is nice and simple. Don't know anything about ASP.NET which seems to be the standard now.

PHP is nice because it's not controlled by one private MONEY-OBSESSED company.

Everyone contributes to PHP which means a MUCH larger developer community, MORE support, and no political games to sacrifice features for higher profits.

I personally prefer PHP over ASP. PHP has bigger community, it widely accepted works on windows, unix and several other platforms.
I feel its more simpler syntax wise as well.

I do have worked on both technologies.

Looks like I'm going against the grain here. I prefer coding in ASP, perhaps that's because my background is in WIndows server technologies, and IIS. I have used PHP in the past, but still go back to ASP. Not knocking PHP by any means, this is just a personal preference.

Cheap Linux hosting also means PHP is becoming more dominant, but ASP can also be run on LInux/Unix machines, install Chillisoft ASP on the server.
