What difference "ban" vs "de-index" ?

What are the differences between "ban" and "de-index" ?
Are they all same?
How to tell when you got banned or de-indexed?

I'm not sure that i will give you the best answer but I try to explain the difference in my eyes. If your site has been banned it doesn't matter what you will try to do to get back.
But, for instance if you unfortunately use the robots.txt file in wrong way it can cause that your site disappear from the index. I thing this is the de-index phenomena. After removing the file everything will be alright soon.
Maybe I'm absolutely wrong

I think that they are both the same. About the only way to tell if you've been banned from Googles index is to do a site: search for your site. If there are no results, then it's likely that either you have been banned, or you were never there in the first place. There are ways of recovering from a Google ban though, you need to fix the problems that your site has, and fill out a form requesting reinclusion.
