![]() ![]() | I am thinking of buying my own server. I will primarily use it for my client because of the nature of his future site and I would have to make sure that we would have a total control of the whole thing. What kind of services can I get from hosting companies if I am to do that? Also I'd like to hear about VPS hosts if anyone uses them. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, Quote:
If you are buying your own server, I would buy it from a reseller company, because if you want to house it yourself you will have to buy a cPanel/WHM license every year. Buy capped high speed Internet lines dedicated to the server. And all this can come to a high amount. Regards, Kieran Taylor.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Actually, the cPanel license is monthly. It usually runs appox. $48.00 US per month. There are free control panels around, but cPanel is the best. VPS is a virtual server, it's still a shared server, only perhaps fewer accounts are sharing that server, but not always. Unless you have experience in server management, I would suggest that you lease a managed server. Your cost should cover connectivity, server rental, and server management. You can get cPanel dedicated servers for around $100 per month to start off, and that price can go up infinitely from there. |

![]() ![]() | Thanks. I have thought about that and I have looked into co-location hosts (Peer1). I have decided however that for now I am just going to go with VPS with the option to upgrading account to a dedicated server. Although I have found some really good deals on servers. I have chosen Gate.com for the VPS. |

I do agree that cPanel is the best. And I can't wait untill they release those new RVskins. They look fantastic. And it looks like they will make that easier to brand. I don;t have much expirience managing a server, but I have a knack for learning things on the fly.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There is a lot to learn, so if you are ready to spend a minimum of a few weeks educating yourself, then I would buy a managed server. Not to mention, it would be worth the extra money involved not to have to worry about the daunting task of managing a server. In fact, it is in some cases cheaper to lease a managed server than it is to buy your own server and rent rack space for it. Plus there are installation fees, unless you know what you are doing and can install your server yourself into the rack. |

![]() | Yes buying your own servers can become very pricy I currently pay $3,200 a month for facility with generator $6,900 /m for T3 line about $900 in security then cpanel license's or 1,511 servers Ya so theres a ruff price beak down not very for those whom are just entering the business |

| Junior Member | A VPS would be a good start. I have found that a good setup is Directadmin control panel running on Debian OS. We have also found cpanel requires more resource than a vps can provide to run at a level we are happy with. These are the things to think about before buying. ![]() |

![]() | There is a long way to go from a VPS to colocation. Actually, a normal dedicated server is enough for most. |

![]() | You may be thinking about colocation, when you say you want to own the server. colocation is fine, if you want more than a dedicated server leased from a hosting company. VPS is a mature technology, you can create multiple servers out of single one. Google for details or checkout the articles in wikipedia. |
