| Junior Member | Hi With most people using larger monitors these days, is it detrimental to page rank to start increasing website widths form 800 to 1024? I have begun to do it on most of my sites as it is heaps better and it seemed to have no effect negatively. I am interested in your opinions. |

![]() ![]() | Always always always make sure your site isn't fixed width. If you need a column a certain size, then sure, do that, but for your main content, make sure it isn't fixed. Horizontal scrolling is the most annoying thing for browsing I have found out.

![]() | to add on to what dhscott said... make the first table width (most outer) 100% and only fix column width sizes.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you do use a fixed width page, don't go over 780 pixels in width. You are pretty safe using that width, as most internet users have their resolution set at or above 800X600. But you need to keep in mind the 30% that still use 800X600, because if the are anything like me, if they are forced to horizontal scroll, they'll leave your site. |

![]() | Our analytics show only 3% of visitors to our sites have 800 width screen. Better to provide better browsing for the 97% than to pander to those with crappy monitors. They already know it's their own fault and not a problem with the web site.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well, that's your call, but 3% is a low number, but even at 3%, 30 out of 1000 visitors won't care for your site. In a year that you have 100,000 unique visitors, you are turning away 3,000 visitors every year. My stats are 15% of the users.....Here's the stats of a very busy site http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp This site has mostly web professionals that use it, so you can guess that the overall resolution stats are going to be higher. If you are concerned with making your site fill up the page, then fixed width isn't for you. But fluid width sites are much harder to code, and they don't always look the same in every resolution. I would suggest that if you want to turn away, or even turn off visitors, then you shouldn't do it to an amount higher than .5 - 1%, depending on how much business you don't mind losing. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, I always fix the width of my containers to 740px so that it is the perfect size for about 90% of Internet users. I use a 22" monitor on my desktop and my sites appear beautifully. Regards, Kieran Taylor. |

![]() ![]() | I still get about 8% of visitors with 800px wide screens. As a rule I will either use a 750px fixed width or use a percentag width providing a variable width withthe screen resolution.

![]() | I also use fixed width templates around 800px wide as a rule. |
