| Junior Member | We all know that the domain name is the number one search term!!! However, does the use of index files in folders make a significant difference? I have found that when a folder is created in your site architecture rather than having www.yourwebsite.com/folder/folder.html it is better to have www.yourwebsite.com/folder/index.html and the results in search engines are very different. Is it correct to say that the search engines find the second way more attractive? I tend to say YES... what do you guys think? |

Most of what you see in the results pages are based off of the keywords you've entered, so unless you actually entered index as one of your keywords, it won't give you any benefit in the results to use index instead of key-word.html. It might in fact, take away some benefit, but I don't think that much weight is given to the domain name. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hi there, It doesn't make the slightest difference unless you are linking to them, for instance, on iWEBTOOL everything is link to http://www.iwebtool.com/tools/ not http://www.iwebtool.com/tools/index.php. The search engine won't really account on the file name. Regards, Kieran Taylor. |

![]() | I dont think they do. If you're going after a key work and your file is simply labeled "index" it's not really going to help much. |

![]() | Agree. However, for best results, a URL path with some variation of www.keyword.com/keyword/keyword.html is the preferred approach. If you use multiple keywords in your path, separate them with hypens (keyword-keyword). Hyphens don't seem to matter for the domain name though. Every little bit helps. |
