Default Do you think CMS is the way of the future

I was looking at some Joomla based sites and couldn't help notice how nice and sleek and feature rich they are.

With that in mind do you see Content Management Systems as the mainstay of future websites.

Which system do you like best!

Hi there,

I don't think CMS's are the future of the web, I think it is the quite opposite. I think as time goes on, more and more people will want to learn how to develop websites. But if I had to choose a CMS it would have to be Subdreamer CMS.

Regards,
Kieran Taylor.

I think people need to save more time, so yes I think that CMS will probably be the future of the web especially when it comes to flexable CMS solutions that can almost be re-designed and re-coded to suit the site owner's needs and that almost happens without touching the base code of the CMS platform, which keeps the stability of the system. So there will be no need for a site owner to spend thousands to build a single website.

I agree with Kieran.

CMS sites like those designed with Joomla use table based layouts, and that technique is just the opposite of the advice of the worldwide authority, W3C.

W3C, or the Worldwide Web Consortium is the international body that sets the standards for code used to create websites. They are the authorities on what will be needed in the future, and although their standards are recommended and not mandatory, sites designed for the future will use XHTML and CSS for layout. They have warned and encouraged web developers for years to convert to XHTML based sites.

They are fairly blunt about using <table> tags for data tables only, not layout.

Will tables based layouts still be supported 5 or 10 years from now? Yes. Are there viewing devices yet to be invented that will have difficulty if a site layout is tables only? Yes. The problem exists now.

The next round, and it's not new, is accessibility. A table based design will have difficulty meeting WAI requirements for accessibility. Most developers overlook the importance of revising techniques and rely on older code and standards because 99% of all websites are still done that way. Many don't know or care about accessibility.

If your definition of "way of the future" is 1-2 years from now, the value of CMS may be practical. By default you are already excluding a percentage of your visitors from becoming customers because of accessibility issues.

Site owners are increasingly interested in taking over content management of their websites, so the demand will be there. My advice is stay in touch with what the future is bringing and have a long term strategy to stay on top.

Cheers,

Jim

I think alot of these CMS apps are too freakin complicated, something simple would be great, I haven't found one though.

Here's an update on the previous reply when I stated "My advice is stay in touch with what the future is bringing and have a long term strategy to stay on top." The future is here and I should have expanded on one solution.

One option that some website owners overlook that will satisfy the control aspect plus allow you to easily add fresh new content is blogging. This is similar to CMS in that it is done from a control panel, yet the code is XML based and not tables, and adding content is easy.

You may add a blog as a subdirectory or subdomain to your main website using free resources like Blogger by Google. The new blogger features drag and drop layout, and if you specify each post as a separate page your site can grow quickly. A post a week adds 52 pages to your site. Drag and drop makes it easy.

My commercial blog is "old blogger" before the drag and drop layout feature in the new blogger released out of beta by Google in January 2007. For fun I created a personal blog with the new version that is simple yet effective. View a new blogger example at Growin' Up in Maine to see what can be done with drag and drop and a little creativity.

Tip: When setting up a blog, the value for adding fresh content to your site will be lost unless you select ftp publishing and host the blog on your server. Otherwise, the URL is not yours but the "free" host. Both options are zero cost, so give some serious thought to blogging.

Jim

I do!

Its makes the process of managing and adding content much simpler, and not to mention creating an eviroment where others can interact in real time..

Just like iwebtool uses a forum, its gives us the opertunity to interact with one another, and yet at the same time creats dynamic content for iwebtool and the search engines!

Most CMS have forums, articles, review and download sections that allow you to offer a unique service to visitors members that will eventually pay off and create a website thats successful..

Look at eBaum, SEO Word, MSN, Warp Speed, Dmoz, Yahoo these are all CMS with heavy advancments and yet they rank the best in traffic, and search engine positioning!

Thanks BloggingFusion I didn't know some of the top rankers used CMS I haven't touched it yet but I have a fella building me a site for $120 from Joomla and I hear that is based on Mambo the pioneer in CMS and I also am told that it is solid foundation for CMS. I guess it is like using Wysiwyg when developing is that right?
