Question Developing a secure auction system?

Well, I have decided to open yet another site. This time I have set my focus on auctions. I have always found them somewhat fun, and on a certain level I guess entertaining.

I am having the application developed, and will be offering services that let users auction goods off and allow other users to bid on the goods. Now, I have decided to create a registration system for users planning on selling items (of course), but I don't really feel a need for a registration system for users planning on purchasing items.

Now my question is: how can I got about letting users place bids, securely? I figured I would take bids by email, say when someone places a bid they enter their email and the bid is increased. This however is flawed as a user could then simply enter random email addresses to increase their bids, or a user passing by who is interested in ruining things could enter fake bids as well as fake emails.

I figure my best option is to force those placing bids to register, but this itself is not a sure thing. Users and passer bys could still simply place fake bids. It would however probablly cut back on some of the fake bids.

Maybe a system that checks emails with activation links? I am not so sure though, what are your guys thoughts?

I have just opened up an auction site called SMS2BID where bids are submitted via SMS.

www.sms2bid.com.au .... check it out... its not a typical auciton though its a unique auction site (highest/lowest bid wins)
