Honestly what's the big deal? They have been up and down for I don't know how long now. Why not submit to some other directories?

Ignore DMOZ and submit to other directories instead. I think that people and google are paying too much attention on dmoz which shouldn't be the case. One site shouldn't have that much importance in SEs IMO.

DMOZ is too strict for site submission and it is not easily approved. It takes year I guess but sometimes they didnt approved it.
Here is the 5 tips
1. Submit your site to right category. Most of the sites submitted to Dmoz are rejected due to having submitted to improper or wrong categories,
2. Make sure that your site has original and quality content.
3. Get your web site professionally designed.
4. Be sure to put your contact information on the web site.
5. Check your site for broken links and spelling errors.
