Backlinks or Word of Mouth?

Which is the best way to get more traffic to your site? Backlinks or Word of Mouth (personal referrals)?

I have always found WOM to be more effective, but backlinking hits the mass media so to speak.

What do you think? :confused:

Ahh, hard question i think backlinks works best as it increases various factors, link pop and PR. But why not do all of them? It also depends on the type of site.

You CAN do both, I was just wondering which you thought was best. I can never afford backlinks

I think word of mouth is an awesome marketing tool and perhaps the oldest marketing tool in business. It is still around for a reason

It is true that it is hard to afford backlinks in the development stages but quality links are a true asset

get free backlinking, and put links on ure site, for exchange...

i think u shud start posting on the forums related to the content of ur site and put the link as your sig...
most of the ppl just check out the links in the sig of other ppls..atleast I do, and ive found quite a few helpful sites tht way!

Well, as already said, both are fantastic ways of driving traffic for your site, and both have their own positives and negatives that can affect your site.

Backlinks are great because they can be long-term links that more people will see than simply by word of mouth. They can also boost your search engine ranking, PR, and other very handy things, more specifically the long-term.

In contrast, word of mouth is great because it can drive traffic to your site in a simple manner. One, it's a very old and very effective technique. Chances are if you get a word of mouth visitor, they're much more likely to stay than if it was from backlinks or search engines, simple because they know someone who uses/vists your site.

Just my take.

I would choose inbound links. If your service is the best one and can satisfy your costumers evetually you will get the word of mouth advertising.

I agree....I think that incoming links can lead to word of mouth, but word of mouth cannot (as much) lead to incoming links

i'm not having much luck with backlinks...and half the ones i have, or more, aren't even being picked up months later. my vote's for word of mouth!
